ObesityHelp Conference Speaker Rachel Girardi

May 13, 2014

We’re happy to introduce Rachel Girardi, M.Sc. as a speaker for the 2014 ObesityHelp Conference!

Workshop Sesson: Reading Between The Labels: How To Outsmart Your Groceries

Do you want you and your family to eat healthier? Are you confused about what fat free, low carb or low calorie really mean? This breakout session will help participants learn to read between the nutrition labels and get healthier right in their own grocery store.

When we talk about being healthy, food marketing can make it very confusing. In the past, different diets have been touted as ‘the one’ to follow, only to be replaced by a new one a few years later. Previously we were told to eat ‘low fat’ or ‘low carb’ but now it seems as though we’re focused on convenience foods, anything promoted by a celebrity or the package with the ‘loudest’ health claims.

This session will pick apart common health claims (such as sugar free, multigrain and fat-free) and what they actually mean for your health. We will talk about how to understand flashy news reports, how to ‘outsmart’ the labels in your grocery store and how to apply these guidelines to your own life in an easy, understandable and fun way.

About Rachel

Rachel graduated with a Masters in Psychology from the University of Western Ontario in 2007 and started her career conducting neuropsych assessments. In the years to follow, she became quite ill and it prompted her to focus on her health. The more she learned about nutrition and fitness and how they could impact the quality of her life, the more she realized that helping others come to this same realization was her true passion. Rachel transitioned into a new career in health behaviour change and has not looked back since.

Her philosophy is that fitness, nutrition and lifestyle cannot be looked at in isolation. She combines her love of fitness and good food to help her clients improve their health and the quality of their lives. Her main goal is to figure out how to fit “healthy” into your life while still letting you live it!
