Breakout Session: Re-Defining Success After Bariatric Surgery
Even though obesity has officially been classified as disease by important groups like the American Medical Association, many people – doctors included – put all the emphasis on the scale and on other measures like body mass index (BMI). In this talk we will look at how success is measured now and other ways to define success after bariatric surgery. Time allowing, we will also talk about some of the long-term issues related to health and nutrition after bariatric surgery, with a focus on things that contribute to weight regain.
About Jacqueline
Dr. Jacqueline Jacques is a Naturopathic Doctor with 16 years of expertise in medical nutrition, and 13 years of experience in bariatric nutrition. Dr. Jacques has spent much of her career in the nutrition industry as a formulator, speaker, writer and educator. She is currently the Vice President of Research and Development for Thorne Research, a US-based medical nutrition company.
Dr. Jacques has dedicated the vast majority of the past 12 years of her life to the obesity community, teaching medical nutrition and advocating for standards in nutritional care. She is the only ND who has been honored as Fellow of the Obesity Society in appreciation for her contributions to the field. Her greatest love is empowering patients to better their own health. She is also the author of a clinical guidebook titled Micronutrition for the Weight Loss Surgery Patient, available through Matrix Medical Communications.
In addition, she is a valued advisor with current and past experience on numerous boards of director and advisory boards including the Obesity Action Coalition, the Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of California, Irvine, and the California Naturopathic Doctors Association. Professionally, she most enjoys anything that allows her to teach, create, and connect. When not working, she spends as much time as possible with her 2 sons, ages 12 and 14.
