In Loving Memory of Dr. Heath Smith
March 5, 2024It is with very heavy hearts that we share with the ObesityHelp and Bariatric Community that patient advocate, general, and bariatric surgeon, Dr. Heath Smith unexpectedly passed away on January 14th, 2024, due to a plane crash.
Remembering Heath Smith, MD, FACS, FASMBS (1983-2024)
Born and raised in Paradise, Texas, Dr. Smith dedicated his life to being of service to others. He knew from a very young age that part of his life’s mission was to become a surgeon, and he even participated in his first surgical case at just 17 years of age. He excelled academically, and received his undergraduate degree at Texas A&M University, and went on to earn his medical degree from the Texas A&M Health Science Center. Dr. Smith completed his residency at Virginia Tech Carilion, Roanoke, Virginia, where he was awarded Resident and Fellow of the Month for his outstanding work, bedside manner, care, and compassion.
After his medical studies, his heart led him back to the community he loved in Paradise, where he took care of countless patients in surrounding communities for many years.

Dr. Smith was an esteemed colleague at My Bariatric Solutions, where he led by example as a compassionate surgeon who was dedicated to providing excellence in patient care. Known for his caring nature, he saved and transformed numerous lives through his precision surgical skills as a gifted surgeon, embodying genuine concern and making a profound impact. His commitment to patient well-being extended beyond the operating room, earning him a regular spot on Good Morning Texas, where he shared his expertise and advocacy for patients.
Beyond healthcare, Dr. Smith's dedication to serving others flourished in his community involvement. For seven years, he served on the school board for Paradise ISD, holding the role of vice-president since 2020. Through his unwavering dedication and heartfelt concern, he touched the lives of countless students, parents, staff, and community members, leaving a lasting positive influence.
Love of Family and Friends
Dr. Smith held his family above all else. He first met his lifelong love, Andrea, in fifth grade, and they married during his freshman year of medical school. He took immense pride in his family, treasuring every moment spent with them.
Known for his down-to-earth demeanor and compassionate spirit, Dr. Smith forged enduring friendships and inspired others to reach their fullest potential. As a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and friend, his legacy will endure through the profound love he shared, the lives he touched, and the immeasurable ways he made a positive impact during his forty years of life.
