Happy National Nutrition Month!

March 11, 2013

Did you know that March is National Nutrition Month?  For some of us, March could easily be called National Get Back On Track Month so it makes sense that this month would be picked to especially focus on nutrition education and information.

Sponsored by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, this year marks the 40th anniversary of the campaign which embraces a different theme each year. This year's campaign slogan is "Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day".  Recognizing that we are all unique to our own health concerns, ethnic traditions, and food preferences, the theme concentrates on making personal healthy food choices tailored to individual lifestyles by making informed decisions.

The indispensable role of the dietitian and their commitment to helping individuals live healthy lives is also being celebrated this month.  March 13th is Registered Dietitian Day!

“As a registered dietitian, I am asked every day, ‘What should I eat?’,” said registered dietitian and Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Spokesperson Vandana Sheth. “The answer of course is, ‘It depends.’”

“Eating is not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ proposition. Rd's make recommendations that accommodate the food preferences, cultural traditions and customs of the many and diverse groups who live in our country,” Sheth said.

So, how can we celebrate National Nutrition Month?  We can celebrate by being mindful of the how important nutrients are to our body, mind, and soul.   We can celebrate by researching nutritional facts and reading informative articles. And we can celebrate by thanking the dietitians and health care professionals that care about us enough to share their insights and knowledge.

Happy National Nutrition Month!  Happy Registered Dietitian Day!
