Happy Memorial Day 2019: Day of Remembrance
May 26, 2019Memorial Day is much more than a three-day weekend. It is a day in the United States to honor and remember the men and woman that have lost their lives in military service to our country.
How to Commemorate the Special Holiday of Memorial Day
Mark the day in remembrance
Spend the day with your family, friends, family, and any military members and veterans you know. Share memories, reflect on the sacrifice made by fallen warriors and their families and discover new ways to encourage those who are serving and have served, and their friends and families.
Memorial Day is also an opportunity for veterans and their families to reflect on the many sacrifices they made in service to America: the training, deployments, combat, and long separations that include missed holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, births, funerals of loved ones and other important life events.
Plan for Memorial Day in advance
Next year, leading up to Memorial Day, work with churches, businesses, schools, and local community groups to organize public Memorial Day gatherings.
You could reach out to Gold Star Family Members, their spouses, children, siblings, and other family members who have lost loved ones in military service. Though they will always feel their loss every single day, Memorial Day can be especially painful for these families.
Volunteer
Volunteer to speak at schools, Memorial Day celebrations, and community gatherings. Members of the Armed Forces have a unique perspective that is important for them to share and for others to learn about. They are the reason we enjoy the freedom we do every single day. Encourage your family, friends, and people in your community to find ways to commemorate Memorial Day.
Express your appreciation beyond Memorial Day
As you go about your daily routine, when you see a member of the Armed Forces, shake their hand and thank them for their service of our country. Even the smallest expression of appreciation goes a long way.
