September 5, 2016The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.
In 1884, the first Monday in September was selected as the day this holiday would occur. The Central Labor Union other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.
The Labor Day holiday is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of the United States.

- Labor Day has been celebrated in the United States and Canada since 1894. On June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories.
- President Grover Cleveland was the President that signed a law designating the first Monday in September as Labor Day nationwide.
- The State of Oregon was the first state to celebrate Labor Day as a legal holiday in 1887.
- The football season starts on or around Labor Day and many teams play their first game of the year during Labor Day weekend.
- Labor Day is the unofficial day that marks the end of Summer. It is considered as the last day of vacation before the start of the new school year (and dreaded by students). Stated differently, it is the Back-to-School kickoff. (Cheered by parents and retail establishments through many Labor Day sales!).
- Thanks to trendsetters like Diddy and J-Lo, wearing white all year is no longer a fashion faux pas. In past years, it was considered a fashion no-no to wear white after Labor Day.
