Live Blogging From the ObesityHelp Conference!
The Webster dictionary definition is: a feeling of being satisfied with how things are and not wanting to try to make them better.
Diana Vogel, MS, MFT, Intern is addressing the issue of complacency after you are a few years post-op. She speaks from personal experience she says. "If you are a post-op and not complacent, get ready." she says. "There's a train coming!"
Once you are a few years out, many post-ops get that feeling of contentment. In the beginning post-ops are all excited, exercising regularly, eating right, and following the plan. But about two years out, there are warning signs. that start to take place.
Diana shared that for her, it was like it happened overnight. She put on her skinny jeans one day and suddenly had a muffin top. Many in the audience could relate to that!
It seems like somewhere along the many post-ops lose the drive to exercise and the high from weight loss surgery is gone so many revert to old habits. Some of the following takes place:
- One becomes bored with the same food
-You can slip back into old habits
-Portion size increases
-Emotional eating happens because you are not addressing stressors and there is a failure to introduce new coping skills
-Making poor food choices
-Lack of structure and planning leads to mindless eating
right now, through the laughter, OH members are asking questions and Diana is giving her them some great advice.
She tells the audience that they all have to get excited again!
