Before and After VSG with Diana: I have been overweight my whole life. Since I was a little girl, I received conflicting messages about food. Always finish your plate, I was told. Then, in the next breath, I was told you better watch what you eat before getting fat. In my big Italian family, love was shown through food. Being athletic as a child and a teenager, I didn’t think much about my weight, even though I was considered severely overweight.
As I got older and was tired of the yo-yo dieting, I just resigned myself to the fact that I would be an overweight adult. I met my husband when I was overweight, and he loved me the way I was. I had my beautiful twins 17 years ago, and the weight just piled on.
Not until I turned 50 did some health issues start creeping up on me. So when I found out that I was pre-diabetic, had high blood pressure, and had mild sleep apnea, I knew I had to do something.

My Surgery and Post-Op Life
That’s when I consulted Dr. Eric Sommer with the New York Bariatric Group. I made all my preoperative appointments, and on August 23, 2018, I had a gastric sleeve done. My starting weight was 254 pounds, and I am currently at 124 pounds. So I’ve lost 130 pounds!
After my weight loss, I decided I would do things that I’ve always wanted to do but never had the nerve or the stamina. So the first thing I did was go zip lining in Las Vegas with my sister and my kids. What a thrill! Then I faced my biggest fear, and I went parasailing in Lake George with my children. Those are two things I never would have or could have done at 254 pounds.
Not only did the surgery give me my health back, but it gave me the opportunity to enjoy life to its fullest and be able to do these wonderful things with my children. Having my sleeve surgery was the very best thing I have ever done for myself. As a mother and a teacher, I have always put everyone before me.

The surgery was all about me, and I couldn’t be prouder of myself. My family still looks at me in amazement, and my friends tell me what an inspiration I am to them. I wear clothes that I never thought I could wear before, and I’m not ashamed to go to the beach or the pool in a bathing suit anymore.
When I look back at pictures of myself at 254 pounds, I feel sad. Not necessarily because of the way I looked but because I was unhealthy and didn’t realize it. I am off all medication and can do just about anything I want to do. The New York Bariatric Group made a huge difference in my life. I wouldn’t change a thing.
