Before and After VSG with Adam, down 214 pounds!
December 22, 2020Before and After VSG with Adam - Why I decided to have WLS:
For my entire life, my weight has been a struggle. From being the fat kid in elementary school that everyone made fun of to the high school football player who was overweight. And still, everyone made fun of. As I grew older, I just figured I would always be a bigger person.
In 2018, I started having severe back issues that were a direct result of being overweight. Coincidentally it also was the biggest I have ever been. I had ballooned up to 423 lbs. Pre-surgery I was not able to do a lot with my kids. Both are active in sports and after school activities.
I'd gotten to the point where I would rather stay home and not do anything such as going out or anything extracurricular.
It had also impacted the relationship I had with my wife. I was not sleeping well anymore. And when I did sleep, I snored like a freight train, so in turn, she was not sleeping then.
It was at this point I decided I needed to make the change. I started meeting with Dr. Cribbins in January 2019. I had to meet with him for 6 months prior to surgery. It was an insurance thing. Although it was a mandatory set up, I am really glad that we went through those things as it taught me a lot about what I was planning to go through. As well as what I needed to expect, physically and mentally.
Before and After VSG with Adam, down 214 pounds!
Name: Adam
Total weight loss: 214 lbs.
Surgery type: VSG
Surgery Date: July 22, 2019
Surgeon: Dr. A. Joseph Cribbins III
My Surgery and Post-Op Life
On the day of my surgery, I was at 369 lbs. Through the 6-month process of meeting with Dr. Cribbins, I was able to drop a fair amount of weight. As much as I prepared for surgery and the days after, I was not prepared at all. The day of my surgery was exciting. Post-surgery was a little rough due to not being able to drink anything for the first 24 hours. A small price to pay for the journey.
Through the next 5-6 weeks of healing, I saw a dramatic decrease in my weight. I believe I lost an average of 7 lbs. each week. Then I was able to start eating soft foods. Challenging is an understatement. Not knowing what would agree or disagree with the “new” stomach was a daily challenge. You start to learn though, what goes down easily and what does not. To this day, 13 months later, I still eat a lot of the same foods as I did in those first few days. As the old saying is, If it is not broke, don’t fix it.
Over the course of the last 13 months, life for me has been such a drastic change. I am almost 100% rid of the back issues. I am off all the blood pressure meds that I was on as a bigger fella. The best part is the snoring is gone. Jenny is super happy with that now that she can sleep!
A Special Milestone / Non-Scale Victory
- I can do things physically now that I have not been able to do since I was a teenager or in college.
- I walk or ride a bike when my knees allow. Old football injuries…. YAY.
- On the one-year anniversary of my surgery, I rode 10 miles. Finishing that bike ride was so gratifying knowing that a year prior to this, I would not have even thought about that. Great feeling to be able to do something like that.
