Weight loss: 100 pounds
Surgery: RNY
Surgeon: Dr. David Oliak
I made the decision to have weight loss surgery when I was 19, but it took two years to convince my family that it was what I truly needed to be successful in my weight loss goals after my previous yo-yo dieting attempts. Less than a month after my 21st birthday, I had gastric bypass surgery (RNY) on September 8, 2010 at the weight of 264 pounds. My previous highest weight was 277.5lbs. Now, almost three years after my surgery, I am down 100lbs and my life has taken a complete 180. I do have to be careful not to overdo it, as an entire life of being overweight can take quite a toll on a body.
I go to spin class and hot yoga (both low-impact exercises) on a regular basis, and I thrive on the physical challenges. I have even become a registered yoga teacher and help guide others through their exercise. I have endurance for activities I never thought I could do. I no longer have to shop in plus-size stores, but can shop pretty much anywhere (which, I’ll admit, has had an effect on the size of my wallet). While it hasn’t always been easy, I wouldn’t change my decision to have WLS. I am now a master’s student studying nutrition in order to become a Registered Dietitian. My goal is to work with future WLS patients to help guide them through their journey, using my education and personal experience.
