5 Things to Consider When Choosing a Gym

August 20, 2014

Often when a person decides to incorporate more exercise into their lives they join a gym. However, the mere act of signing a contract and getting a membership card does not improve ones health. Initially, the enthusiasm and commitment are there and new members show up to the gym regularly.

Here are five things to consider when choosing a gym to ensure your personal interests, goals and budget are considered. All gyms should allow you a free tour, and even a free day to workout so you can check out the equipment and facilities.

Location — If the location is not convenient then it is less likely you will go to the gym. However, consider when going to the gym fits into your day and if it is more convenient to have a location near your home or near your job, or both. I was lucky enough to find a gym that had locations near my home, job, and my boyfriend’s apartment. If you travel a lot, you may also want to inquire if the gym has locations in other states or reciprocity agreements with other gyms brands so you can utilize their facilities while traveling.

Hours — Same for location, you want to be sure the gym is open when you plan on working out, especially if you plan on going early in the morning or later in the evening. Also check weekend hours and inquire about holiday schedules.

Cost & Contract — Gym fees and costs can include initial membership, monthly charges, and costs for special classes and personal training. It is best to consider the overall costs and if a contract is required to join. If a contract is required be sure to read the agreement and understand the monthly costs, any penalty for early cancellation, and the steps needed to cancel the contract.

Classes — If you have an interest in certain group fitness classes then you will want to see the schedule of classes offered. You may ask if you can try out a class before joining. Check which classes are offered as part of your membership and which might cost an additional fee.

Child Care/Family Activities — Many gyms offer childcare, however, check the age limits, times, and costs. If family fitness is important to making your choice then check what activities and classes they offer for children.

Now that you've chosen a gym to join, remember to log and track your workouts using the ObesityHelp Health Tracker.
