4 Things to Consider When Shopping for Protein Supplements
December 23, 2016Protein supplements are all the rage these days and are promoted by many fitness and nutrition advocates. But what makes a good protein supplement, and when is an appropriate time to use them? There is most certainly a time and place for these products, especially as they relate to weight loss surgery.
4 Important Points About Protein Supplements
1. Protein Supplements are Exactly That - Supplements
This means that they are essentially bridging a gap in nutrients (in this case, specifically protein) that may be lacking in the diet, or for someone may have an increased need. The general, healthy population usually takes in more than enough protein to meet their daily needs.
During weight loss, and especially with weight loss surgery, protein needs are often substantially higher than normal. Thus, protein supplements are often very useful in helping to ensure adequate intake to support healing after surgery and maintain muscle mass during weight loss. These are also often helpful/recommended during the pre-operative period when many patients are instructed to maintain a high protein, largely liquid diet.
Once a person has stabilized after surgery, healed properly and is doing well eating a solid, balanced diet, protein supplements are often reduced, then discontinued, as it is generally recommended that high protein food sources again become the main source of protein in the diet. However, it is extremely important to discuss any reduction or discontinuation of protein supplements after surgery with your dietitian, to ensure you are maintaining adequate protein intake and are at a stage in your weight loss surgery journey where this is safe.
2. Do Not Get Sold Into Fancy Gimmicks
Beware of ingredients. Usually, the simpler the solution, the better. Your physician and registered dietitian will instruct you on any need for additional nutrients in your diet, where to get these nutrients, and if a special protein supplement should be used.
There is usually no need to buy supplements with “special” ingredients (i.e. creatine, etc.) and often these ingredients can do more harm, than good. Many ingredients added to protein supplements, while they may sound good, can interact with medications and current medical conditions. This includes anything labeled as “all natural” (this means your herbals!) – just because something is natural, does not mean it is necessarily good for you.
If you are currently using a protein supplement and have not discussed it with your physician or registered dietitian, it may be a good idea to do so. Informing your physician or dietitian will allow them to review the list of ingredients and ensure that it is safe and will be a good fit for you. Often people pushing these products do not have an understanding of how many of these ingredients can have adverse affects if given the right circumstance.
3. Protein Content is Important
Generally, weight loss surgery patients need to look for a protein content of no less than 15 grams of protein per serving. Why? It is especially important post surgery since most patients are not able to take in a large volume of either solids or liquids. Thus, a more concentrated protein supplement is helpful to ensure that protein needs are met.
4. Sugar Content is Important
Many supplements can also be misleading, as they are often viewed as a “health drink” and thus, healthy for you. This is not always the case, as there are some that have higher amounts of sugar than others. Look for those with less than 5 grams of sugar per serving to help ensure a lower calorie drink that will work WITH your weight loss and not compromise the rate of your loss.
The details listed above are meant only as a guide when shopping for a protein drink that is right for you. Every person is an individual, and individual needs will vary from person to person. It is important to talk with a registered dietitian and your physician when using protein supplements about how these will fit into your weight loss journey and goals.
There are hundreds of products on the market, from ready to drink shakes, powders, bars, and many different formulations. Understanding how these can help you in your weight loss journey is important, in both the pre-operative and post-operative time periods, as well as when exercising.
