October 12, 2016

If you’re one of the thousands of people who are considering having surgery in Mexico, this article is written for you. Over the years, Mexico has transformed into a world-renowned leader in bariatric surgery. Thousands of people from all over the world are now looking to Mexico to provide the most experienced and highly skilled surgeons and hospital care in the world.

To navigate your way through the maze of information to conduct your research on surgery in Mexico, read my article, “5 Tips for Researching Weight Loss Surgery in Mexico,” as I touched on some of the resources available to help you in finding a surgical team in Mexico that’s the right fit for you.

The service you choose should make you comfortable knowing that you’ve made the right decision. Everyone is nervous about having surgery. That’s normal. But, you should have complete confidence that you’ve chosen the right team.

As you conduct research and work your way through it to make your decision, below is a list of questions you might ask of your potential surgeon candidates. The answers to these questions can help you narrow your list down to the perfect fit.

1Will I still be able to receive care once I return home?
Some surgeons and medical tourism companies employ specialized, certified medical professionals to provide aftercare for their patients. As you research and decide on a surgeon, ask about their aftercare program, if a bariatric nurse is available to answer questions and the cost.

2What pre-operative tests are required before coming to Mexico?
Be truthful in filling out the medical questionnaire. Depending on your health history, surgeons may have you specific tests done before traveling to Mexico. Most will provide the necessary tests, blood work, EKG, etc. as part of their surgery package. Make sure to ask.

3How important is it to stick to the pre-op diet?
The pre-op diet is an important part of the process. Most overweight people have a non-alcoholic fatty liver. Fat accumulates in and around the liver. The tip of your liver lies over a large portion of your stomach. The pre-op diet helps to shrink the liver by using up stored glycogen.

4How long should I plan for recovery at home before returning to work?
Follow the recommendation of your surgeon. Generally, two weeks is the minimum but four to six weeks would allow time to fully heal, especially if you have a more physical job. Knowing your surgeon's recommendations can allow proper planning for time off work.

5What is included in the price and what will I have to pay for myself?
Look for costs you may be required to pay that are not listed in the package you select. Ask what the average expense would be beyond what their basic package offers. Check to find out what costs are included. For any that aren't covered, ask how much will they add to the price?

6If there is an emergency, what can I expect to happen?
Emergencies are rare but can happen with any surgery. You want to discuss this with your surgeon or coordinator. Find out if an emergency occurs if the hospital is adequately equipped with the expertise to handle it. With a clinic, check on their plan for a transport to the hospital.

7Can I bring a companion?
A travel companion can be the difference between a good experience and a great experience. You companion can be your personal advocate. Some facilities have accommodations for a support person in both the hospital and the recovery facility included in the package price.

8Is the surgery at a hospital or clinic?
Hospitals are prepared for most catastrophic incidents. A clinic may not have the facility or the expertise for emergencies and therefore require transportation to a local hospital. Check to see how long it will take to transport you. You can decide what your preference is.

9What are the arrangements a facility will have to make my trip more enjoyable and less stressful?
Some companies include shopping tours, trips to the beach and more. Some have nearby dental and mani-pedi services available at Mexico prices to indulge yourself with whiter teeth and nails. These services can break up the recovery stay and provide relief from surgery stress.

10What are the complication rates and the number of surgeries performed?
Surgeons should gladly provide data on their complication rate. The ASMBS compiles complication statistics. Your surgeon’s stats should be in line with the stats. Research surgeons on obesityhelp.com to read what patients say about their experience. Choose an experienced surgeon with an excellent record.

I’m sure that these questions will lead to many others. I hope that this gives you a place to start. When you’re comfortable with the results of your research, gather the courage and make your decision so you can begin your weight loss surgery journey to a heathier you.
