I called Garden Grove Hospital about the surgery back in Nov of 2002 and attended Dr. Nease's seminar. Dr. Wittgrove was there also and the seminar provided so much information about the surgery. It answered all my questions and helped me to decide.
I submitted all my paper work for ins approval and then in March I met with Dr. Nease for a consultation.
After I was approved, I met with Dr. Nease again and we set up my surgery date. I was scheduled for surgery on 5/16/03. I started out weighing 476lbs. About 2 weeks after surgery, Dr. Nease told me I could go on semi soft foods, so I had some split pea and ham soup. Unfortunately, a piece of ham got lodged and I was in pain. I went to the ER and Dr. Nease came in, they did an upper GI and found the problem. Dr, Nease did not get upset with me, he told me that this can sometimes happen. He then told me that I was going to have to have an EGD to remove the food, so I would not be in pain any longer. Throughout this entire procedure, Dr. Nease stayed right there with me. After I was sent home, he called me quiet frequently to check up on me, see how I was doing and to make sure I was ok.
Dr. Nease is one of the most caring and compassionate surgeons I know. He makes sure that you have all the information you need to make a decision about WLS. His seminars are informational and excellently presented. I highly recommend Dr. Nease to anyone looking to have WLS.
I attended Dr. Nease's seminar about 2 mos prior to my actual scheduling of surgery. I was overwhelmed by his seminar, not because of all the info he gives you, but how open and sincere he was. He was so open with us and I am not use to this with a normal size person when dealing with obese individuals.
Dr. Nease shows you slides of his family. His Father died from complications as a resulf of morbid obesity and this is why Dr. Nease is a bariatric surgeon. The information that Dr. Nease relays to you at his seminar is not only professional, but hearfelt. He knows where we are coming from.

My surgery was on 7/19/02, I had lap RNY and had an uneventful surgery. I had surgery on a Thursday and was relased from the hospital on Sunday. I was up walking the same day as surgery, which Dr. Nease stresses to us! He says that he offers the surgery and support, but you have to do your part too. I was back to work within one week of surgery. I have lost a total of 120 lbs to date. I have had no complications whatsoever.

I would highly recommend Dr. Nease! I always wanted to be a jogger and I am running 5K in August. I owe everything I have accomplished to Dr. Nease and his staff. He is so caring, compassionate and supportive of all his patients. You are just not another patient to him, but a human being.
I would very highly recommend Dr. Nease to do the surgery. I had spent the past year visiting a variety of hospitals and talking with Drs. regarding the procedure. I was scared and in all honesty wasn't even sure I was going to do it. There are several hospitals in the Orange County area where I felt as though I was part of a "cattle call" , others did not offer the pre-op or post-op support group and individualized attention that I felt I'd get with Dr. Nease.
I attended a seminar about 2 months prior to my surgery at Garden Grove HOspital and after hearing what was said, I knew that I wanted to do the surgery. After the presentation a friend and I asked Dr. Nease if we could ask him a few questions.
Well.... an hour later we were still in his office but you see that is his. style. He answered all of our questions and explained everything in great detail. He cared and it showed by this interaction. It was at this time I knew I'd found what I considered to be the best Dr. for my surgery.
On May 16 I had my surgery. Everything went very well. Dr. Nease visited with me each day I was in the hospital(2 days) and he even called me several times after I got home. Again, he answered any questions I had. I was up and walking around 3 hours after I got up to my room.
Dr. Nease and his staff are very supportive, extremely kind, good, caring people. They offer a monthly support group and I have never called the office without receiving the answer to any question I have. There is a pre-op seminar to explain how to eat post-op and we've had two post-ops seminars - one on nutrition and one on exercise.
I did have an infection at one of the wound sites and that is still healing. Dr. Nease instructed me how to care for the wound and although the healing process is taking a bit longer than I like, it is healing at it's own pace. My understanding is only 5% of patients get this infection. Lucky me :-) Five of the six scars are slowly disappearing - my primary care physician even commented how wonderful the scars looked.
Would I recommend Dr. Nease? You bet and I have already. Meet with him and you'll understand why.
I invite anyone to email me with any questions.
My life has already started to change and it's only been 6 weeks. It is an adventure though and be sure you are willing and ready.
I just learned that Dr. Nease is leaving his practice in OH to go to CA on Mar. 1, 2003. He is leaving a long line of surprised patients who have been getting ready for surgery. I am offended and saddened that I was encouraged to get records, go to dietician and psych visits only to be told he will not do my surgery now. He impressed me with his seminars and overall committment to the obesity battle. I am left not knowing where to turn.
My first impression was that he was very young, but after his first seminar I realized he is dedicated to bariatric surgery. I have now met his office staff and all seem very friendly and willing to help with all my questions. I am impressed with the SOMC campus. Being from Huntington and involved with Cabell Huntington Hospital I was not familiar with SOMC, but our surgeons don't do laporoscopic surgery which is what I really want. I found Dr. Nease to be very frank about the surgery, the risks and the advantages. I realize that to make it work, I have to be dedicated as well and I feel that I have found the right professionals to help me. I'm waiting on insurance approval and if it gets too close to Thanksgiving and Christmas, so be it. I'm ready. As for surgical competence and bedside manner that remains to be seen, but I feel he'll score high in both areas.
...
I am now 19 days post op and I was right about Dr. Nease. I couldn't have had a better doctor. His office staff are all very helpful and very nice to all patients.
They stress aftercare and support groups and are available for phone calls any time. From the very first seminar with Dr. Nease he was very frank about the risks of surgery as well as the benefits. Overall, I would rank Dr. Nease tops in both surgical competence as well as bedside manner. He is one of the few docs I know who does not rush his visits with you both in his office as well as hospital visits.
Dr. Nease a very nice person. I attended one of his seminars after talking to several people about him. Everyone thinks very highly of him. I was impressed with his credentials, knowledge, and personality. I met his office staff a few days later, and they were all very helpful and nice. They got me started right away on my journey. All my questions were answered satisfactorily, and there were alot of questions!
05/02
Seen for the first time at a weight loss meeting he arranged for our area. He seemed to be very knowledgeable, very patient and calm. He stayed late and answered all questions asked. He was very sure that we understood the risks as well as the benefits of WLS. I have attended two meetings now, because I had more questions and wanted to comfirm my first opinion of him (which was great so far). I also wanted to meet other people that had WLS before. I spoke with three of his previous patients and listened to their opinion of him. So far his staff have been very helpful. He is new to our area, but is very active in arranging a structured aftercare program for his patients. There are plans in effect for a regular monthly support group for our area. I will update more about his care and other news as I continue on my journey.
11/13/02 consultation update
Well all I can say is that after meeting with Dr Nease at my consultation appointment that I have faith in my surgeon. He remembered me right away from all the meetings I had attended before. And he was willing to answer any questions I had. His staff were very nice and professional as well. May God bless him during surgery.
* Please remember this is my opinion only!*
Thank you.
I loved Dr. Nease and his Staff from the first time I went into the office. I never got the feeling of not being cared for or that I was just someone who was there to make them some more money. They talked everything over with me and answered any questions I had both before and after surgery. I could call anytime day or night and he would call me back quickly if I had a problem.
Before surgery, I was told of the risks and actually.. everything about the surgery. I went to a seminar held by Dr. Nease and when it came time to go into the hospital, I knew what to expect.
I would recommend Dr. Nease to anyone thinking of this surgery. He is a wonderful, wonderful man who most likely saved my life. I am eternally grateful for his abilities!!!!
