Summa Health System Hospital
Dr. Dan performed my RNY on 4/19. My experience with Dr. Dan and his whole team from the start of the process at the seminar and ongoing has been one of the best experiences I have had with a doctor office. Dr. Dan is one of the nicest people I have met and really makes a point in making you feel like he cares about your experience. The day of surgery I was very nervous but once he came in the room to see me, before I was brought to the operating room, I calmed down. His team also deserves praise. Everyone from the girls that work the front desk, Bev the financial specialist, to the medical assistants Ashley and Jeff, nurses Debbie and Noelle, Laura the nutritionist, their in house internal doctor Dr. Wells who can supervise your pre-op diet and the psychologist Dr. Perkins all are amazing. They are all cheerleaders for your weight loss journey. Anyone from the Akron/Cleveland area that is looking into WLS should go to a seminar at Summa Bariatric. The pre-op and post-op care you will receive far exceeds any other in the area.

My first impression of Dr Dan was that of a dedicated physician with a remarkable ability to interact with his patients. From his friendly talk and individual understanding of each patient you soon realize that you have found a surgeon that you would trust with your life. As it turns out Dr. Dan is of course FACS who then did a fellowship at the cleveland clinic. His office runs like a machine each member of the staff well trained and with the patient always first. Dr. Dan stresses the importance of after care. You are given a number that you can call and one of the three physicians will return your call in less than 15 minutes. His office holds many meetings before surgery to discuss exercise, diet what to expect before and after surgery. Dr. Dan has a video on the procedure that he asks you to watch. On your next appointment he carefully goes through the risks involved and any questions you might have. What can I say I trust his surgical competence with my life, his bedside manner is sincere and caring. Jim Mason
I had surgery on Feb 15, 2011 and Dr. Dan was just wonderful to me. He always made sure I understood what was happening. His bedside manner and wonderful. I am feeling great and have lost weight. The bariatric Center at Summa Health is wonderful and the people who work there are so helpful and friendly they make you feel relaxed and comfortable.
I just saw Dr. Dan, for my 3 month post-op check up. I am down 90 lbs. and still losing! What a great feeling! My blood pressure and blood sugar are normal, I don't have pain in my feet, legs and back and I'm able to exercise vigorously without problems.
The doctor and dietician I worked with prior to surgery helped me change my eating habits and lose 56 lbs. before the surgery. My surgery went extremely smoothly and the recovery was just as smooth. The only real problem I had was that my pain wasn't well controlled with morphine and Dr. Dan was in surgery until late afternoon/early evening, so they couldn't get an order for something else. Dr. Dan seems to really care about me and my success. He always patiently answers all my questions and tells me to call if I have others.
My surgeon and his entire practice have been a great support system. They even sent me flowers in the hospital to congratulate me on making this first step toward changing my life! I would highly recommend the Summa Bariatric Practice to anyone considering the surgery. It will change your life!!!

Surgery was 2/8/11 went very well. My father and cousin both had Dr. Dan and had a great experience with him. I believe he truly cares about his patients. I had to stay a few extra days into the weekend. I thought I would never see him on a Saturday night, but he showed up just to check and make sure everything was continuing to go as planned. Never thought a doctor would do that for a patient. Right now I'm still recouping but I have not had pain pills since the 10th and I wake up feeling better every day. Even if your just considering it go to a meeting and gather more information. I have already lost forty pounds since January 10th the day I started opti fast, and the weight continues to go down. The office staff is knowledgeable and will tell you don't hesitate to call if you have questions or need anything.
Everything went great. Just like I was told it would be. I began the Opti-Fast the week of Thanksgiving 2010. I lost 40lbs from 11-22-2010 through 1-4-2011 ( 6 weeks ). From the surgery on 1-4-2011 until today 2-17-2011 ( 6 weeks ) I have lost another 50lbs for a total of 90 lbs. I feel great. I started at 441 lbs and now weigh 351 lbs. I still have aways to go, But I am well on my way.
The whole experience has been a whirlwind but very organized. Surgical team at Akron City Hospital were top notch. I felt completely confident from admit to discharge. The Summa Bariatric team is there for you 100% of the time. I cannot fail in this system. Thanks to everyone who has made this change to my lifee possible!
Dr. Dan did my Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery on 7/27/2010. When I started with Summa's Bariatric Program, I weighed 331 pounds. I just had my 6 month post-op checkup today (1/26/11) and I am down 100 lbs. and am training for a 10K race. In the beginning when I started, Dr. Dan met with me and explained the different options for surgery and recommended the best surgery for me would be the RNY Gastric Bypass. There were a lot of meetings with dieticians, psychologists and with Dr. Dan leading up to my surgery and the care before, during and after has been, without a doubt, fantastic. Before my surgery, I was taking high blood pressure medication, had to use a C-PAP machine for sleep apnea and had acid reflux. At 6 months, I am not taking any medication for anything, I don't have sleep apnea and the acid reflux is GONE. Summa's Bariatric Center has a great support group that is run by the staff Dietician, Laura. They meet once a month and I feel it's important to go to them and meet with people that have had the surgery and know what you've went through and are going through. The other thing I like is that whenever I go to the office for a follow up visit, EVERYONE there knows me by my first name. Dr. Dan always takes time with me to see how I'm doing and to make sure I have all my questions answered. The level of caring and professionalism is unrivaled. I did a lot of research with other programs in the Akron/Cleveland, OH area and Summa's program is hands down the absolute best. I would recommend anyone considering a bariatric procedure to call the Bariatric Center at Summa Hospital in Akron and schedule a consultation. I'd also be happy to share my experience with you. You can e-mail me at [email protected].
I met Dr.Dan at a seminar for Summa Bariatric Centers. The seminar was short and to the point while also giving all information about possible adverse effects from surgery. Also explained that the patient also had to cooperate and do their part because the surgery itself would not take off all the weight. He also let us know that if you were not going to do what needs done such as quit smoking/drinking he wouldn't do the surgery. He also spent 1 1/2 hours answering all kinds of questions from insurance to how long pre-op testing would take. Dr. Dan brought to our attention health problems that can be immproved with bariatric surgery. He was right. I no longer use oxygen, my bi-pap settings have decreased and I no longer ride an electric scooter through the stores.
I would reccommend Dr.Dan and his staff to anyone. Office staff and hospital staff all have extra training to care for bariatric patients. FOLLOW THE DOCTORS ORDERS and you to can have an excellent experience especially with Dr. Dan.
