When I go to Dr. Barker's office it is kind of crazy in there sometimes, but I know I have a team of professionals working on my behalf. Dr. Barker answered all the questions I had and shared the research with me. He put my mind at ease about the actual surgery. Everyone in his office has been very helpful and are nice.
Even though I knew four friends who had VSG by Dr. Barker and had seen the remarkable results, felt their happiness, and heard all the positive comments, I was hesitant about taking the big step. There's not a bigger weenie than me! I was scared to death about having surgery and twice rescheduled my consultation. Dr. Barker was very calm during my one-on-one consult and answered all my concerns. However, I was still stressed and in the ready-to-run mode, until the 2nd group consultation. Dr. Barker talked to all of us with such expertise and confidence, that I begin to chill a bit. Then Kevin, his RN surgical assistant began to speak to us. Kevin had VSG a year ago, so he KNOWS what he is talking about. He very thoroughly and honestly told all of us what to expect at each step. Kevin gave us so much sagacious advice, with an empathetic, kind voice and sensitivity that convinced me to go through with the surgery. He's my HERO!Next, the Internist spoke to us. His wife had VSG, so, not only did he speak to us with his professional medical knowledge, but from personal experiences with his wife. I had a scary experience 20 years previously with anethesia during an ovarian cyst removal surgery, so being "put under" was my biggest concern. It shouldn't have been. Rick was there during my EGD and VSG, and couldn't be better. He's the best! They all are not only exceptional and the best at what they do, but they are all comforting and caring. The entire staff is there to help guide you through the process and to make sure your questions are answered. I stressed so badly prior to surgery, that the cardiologist had to add a powerful blood pressure medication. I was afraid I wasn't going to be able to have surgery, due to the fact that I couldn't do a stress test until my BP was under control. They got me there! Dr. Barker is the absolute BEST surgically and professionally and has surrounded himself with the absolute BEST! These people don't approach bariatric surgery as a procedure, they approach it as a major event in a fellow human's life that is meaningful and important. They really want you to do well and have a better life! There are plenty of smiles, touches, encouragement, and support for everyone! I feel so blessed to have this team!!! P.S. Dr. Barker's gorgeous blue eyes don't hurt, either!
Dr. Barker and his staff were great. He was very knowledgeable, helpful and up on the latest information about nutrition and weight loss. He and Dr. Thompson also gave me insight on the different types of WLS which I hadn't fully understood before. But more importantly they are kind and encouraging and non-judgmental. They care about the well being of the whole person not just about the weight of a person. After each visit I feel motivated and ready to be the best.
I just had my gastric bypass two weeks ago by Dr. Wade Barker and words cannot express how amazing this doctor is. He spends time with you until you are satisfied and all of your questions are answered and has really good bedside manner. I had researched high and low and he is by far the #1 bariatric surgeon in Texas. He is 3 hours from my home and I would had driven 20 hours. My overall rating for him is a 10+.
I am seeking a revision and I chose Dr. Barkers office. Dr. Barkers office is very busy. My appointment was at 4:30 and my husband and I didn't leave his office until almost 8 pm. He answer every question that my husband and I had about my revision. His office staff was very helpful and knowledgeable. By the time we left, I had several necessary appointments set up and paperwork to be filled out and returned. Despite the wait time, I would recommend Dr. Barker. Just be ready to wait.
I have been a patient of Dr. Barker's since '06. I have had three surgeries with him, and there is no one I would trust more to operate on me than him. I have complete confidence in his surgical abilities.
Prior to surgery he is very good with taking his time with you, answering your questions, and helping you decide what surgery is for you. His aftercare with his patients used to be just as good.
Unfortunately, he has grown so much that I am disappointed with his care post surgery. I expected to see him at least once post surgery. He now uses an excellent internist to assist him. But I still like having the contact with the surgeon himself.
His office staff is very supportive and friendly. One negative is the wait. Be prepared to wait up to two hours for your appointment once you are there. But, I do feel he is an extremely skilled surgeon in laproscopic surgery and would choose him again should I need it.
There are support groups which I have heard good things about. Unless you are local to the office, it doesn't work. If you are close, I would strongly suggest going to them. The one thing I can say other than Dr. Barker's skill, is that he genuinely cares about his patients and believes in what he is doing.
