Mexicali Bariatric Center Bariatric Center
At 6' 1" and 350lbs. I knew it was time to get help. I first spoke with Nina. She answered all my questions and quilled any fears
I might of had. We scheduled my surgery For the 5th of Dec. 2014 and from the time Ernesto picked me up at the airport I
knew I had made the right decision. I had the Gastric Sleeve done the next day and can't say enough about the Doctors I meet while there. Dr. Wilhelmy, Beltran & Campos where all reassuring and answered all my questions. I like to give a big shout out to them and Carla, Yolando, & Ernesto for all their help and for making my time there enjoyable, and yes even fun.
It's been about 45 days and I've lost 50 lbs. There has been no problems and for the first time in a long time I have complete confidence that I'll continue to lose weight and start enjoying the new me. Best decision I've ever made.
Thanks Again
Captain A. B. Russell
Dr. Wilhelmy, Dr. Beltran, Dr. Campos, Ernesto, Carla and all of the staff at Mexicali Bariatrics & Almater Hospital were incredibly kind, informative, and professional. I can't say enough about what an incredible experience I had while having WLS in Mexico. There were no concerns with crossing the border, no issues with a language barrier and the accommodations, both hotel and hospital, were comfortable and private.
I was visited by a Dr. daily, if not more than once, and I never felt that I was "out of the loop."
I work in healthcare and can vouch that I received better care from Mexicali Bariatrics/Almater Hospital than is provided in the US.
This team is A+ and I would recommend them to any and every one!
Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns!! :)
The best decision i have ever made was traveling from South Carolina to Mexicali to let Dr. Wilhelmy do my weight loss surgery. From the moment we got to the hospital all the way until today it has been nothing but a great experience. Him and his staff answered every question i had about the surgery and never left me wondering. I would recommend Dr. Wilhemy to anybody who is looking for weight loss surgery. Only a month post-op and i have never felt better about myself. Big thanks to Dr. Wilhemy and all of his staff.
I had my Gastric Sleeve performed on December 29, 2014. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about this facility, provider, and staff. Dr. Wilhelmy was amazing and attentive along with Dr. Campos, Dr. Beltran, Yolanda, Carla, Ernesto, and all the nurses who provided nothing but wonderful care during my stay. Every individual played a role in the start of my journey and I couldn't be more thankful for everything!
Dr. Wilhelmy performed the gastric sleeve procedure for me. I'll be honest that, despite the fact that numerous members of my family had that or other procedures performed at the Mexicali Bariatric Center, I was apprehensive in having this procedure performed out of the United States. I put in an extraordinary amount of research and thought before deciding to go ahead with it.
My concerns dissapated during my stay in the hospital after the procedure. Although I didn't have much contact with Dr. Wilhelmy after the procedure, he has a wonderful and professional team of care givers that are, in my personal experience, second to none. They cared for me very, very well both pre and post op, and are still providing great follow-up advice and care.
The procedure itself went without a hitch and I found the post op instructions to be extremely detailed and comprehensive. The procedure was performed a month ago and I have lost 23 lbs. so far. I am pleased to report that I am very happy with my decision to have the surgery performed by Dr. Wilhelmy and his fantastic team!
Cannot say enough good things about Dr. Wilhelmy and the rest of the entire staff at MBC.
He is very professional and very personable. The facility is immaculate . My procedure went off without a hitch and I never felt any real pain.Just a little discomfort. Everyone is so supportive and answered all my questions and alleviated all my fears. So happy I went there and put my trust in them .

I am a senior in high school and have battled my weight since about intermediate school. We're not sure why, but my metabolism seems to be low and I just have a difficult time losing weight. As you can imagine, my self esteem is very low. I can no longer do many things that I love to do. My pediatrician is actually the person who suggested bariatric surgery for me. My parents' insurance would not cover me for surgery until after I turned 18, which would be after I start college. And then I would have to go through a program and it would probably be not this summer but next summer before I could have surgery. I couldn't stand thinking I had to wait that long any more. I did not want to start college as the "fat kid." My parents began researching options and we heard about Mexicali Bariatric Center from another family member. He had the sleeve done there many years ago and is doing great. My parents researched several doctors and after studying reviews we decided on MBC. One thing that especially impressed my Mom was that if our insurance would have approved me, I would have had to had a bypass because that is all they pay for. However, after completing all the forms and examining my health history, the doctor, Dr. Wilhelmy, wanted me to consider the sleeve instead. He said he felt that it would be the best option for me, especially due to my age and noted the pros and cons of both. My Mom really liked that he was concerned more about what was best for me than trying to hurry up and schedule a surgery. After some more questions and discussion, we set up my surgery for Dec. 19 over Christmas break. The whole trip went like clockwork. Our driver picked us up and brought us to the hospital so I could have my lab work and tests done and then took us to a very nice hotel to stay the night. The next morning we were transported to the hospital for my surgery. Dr. Wilhelmy and his team, Dr. Beltran and Dr. Campos, and the anesthesiologist were all very thorough and explained directly to me and my parents the whole process. Everything went great! The whole staff is super nice and took really good care of me. The doctors also checked on me every day while I was there, actually they came in several times a day to check me over and just to talk and see how I was doing. And even though now that I am home, my parents do have direct contact with MBC and the staff at MBC checks on me a lot to see how I am recovering. If you are thinking about having surgery and are searching for a doctor, I would like to recommend Dr. Wilhelmy and the staff at MBC. My parents said they were very professional and experienced and I think they took great care of me! Yesterday was my 3 week anniversary and I have lost 28 lbs. since then, not to mention what I lost on the pre-op diet before my surgery. I feel like I have a great start on a healthier future, thank you Dr. Wilhelmy and the staff at MBC!

Everyone at Mexicali Bariatrics is wonderful!!! My mother got the Lap-Band with Dr. Aceves in 2007. She's lost over 150lbs now. Which is rare success with the lap-band. My mother has brought 5 or 6 of her friends to Mexicali Bariatrics and I've watched all of them have wonderful success, some with the band but I think most were with the sleeve.
In 2013 I decided to go with the Lap-Band as well... 6 months later I realized it was not working for me. I wanted to go back to Dr. Aceves and get the revision to a gastric sleeve. Unfortunately Dr. Aceves passed away and my heart was truly broken.
I was surprised and encouraged by the folks in Mexicali, they kept their clinic running and success rates were still sky high. I knew I would be safe and taken care of here.
Dr. Wilhelmy met my expectation of absolute excellence. They take a few extra steps to make sure 1. The surgery will be successful and 2. No leakage!!!
I'm almost 1 month post-op and I'm over 30lbs lost.
Although I had a tough time with the surgery (band removal, gall bladder removal, and gastric sleeve) They were very attentive to my pain and I never felt like I was waiting for pain meds. The doctors seem like they live in the hospital.. or at least two blocks away, because they were there around the clock.
I was so confident in the people at Mexicali Bariatric that I was talking to my fellow patients in the van ride from San Diego to Mexicali. I told them my story and my mother's story and ensured them that they made the right decision and everything was going to be alright. I can understand the fear of going to mexico for surgery. I had the same fear in 2007 when my mother told me she was going. I worked in hospitals (ekg tech and CNA) for 5 years. and Almater Hospitals is one of the cleanest hospitals I have ever seen. I guess I was just a bit too enthusiastic about everything because these lovely ladies in the van thought I was some kind of seed planted by MBC.
So the day after surgery I asked her again... do you still think I'm a seed? and we laughed a lot because she realized everything I said was true. The facilities are amazing, the people are wonderful.
I can go on and on about how great Dr. Wilhelmy, Dr. Campos, Dr. Beltran and the team, Carla and Yolanda are.
Please if you'd like to ask me any questions PM me and I'd be happy to answer.
btw.... I'm not a seed.
Excellent surgeon. Had absolutely no problems with my gastric sleeve surgery in Mexicali. I got Dr. Wilhelmy's name from a friend that also underwent gastric sleeve surgery. She spoke highly of him and I have to agree with her. Had my surgery end November and have lost 32 lbs so far. The only problem that I encountered was acid reflux but then again I have permanent scarring from acid reflux caused by stress many years ago. It is now mid January and the acid reflux has decreased somewhat and I feel wonderful.
I had been turned down for bariatric surgery by both Medicare and the two major hospitals in Maine. I was too old, 74, not heavy enough at 198, and what was worse, I had a Nissen Fundoplication, a surgery to tighten my esophagus to end GERD, which actually had stopped working very well. However, I had diabetes II, my weight and A1c, 6.6, were both creeping up and though I didn't yet have any complications, they seemed inevitable. I started searching for a surgeon out of the US who would perform the revision and the gastric bypass which would give me a good shot at reversing diabetes. Eventually, my search led me to Mexicali Bariatric Center and Dr. Gilberto Ungson. All my research and direct contact to people there built my confidence that I had found a good solution. My internist was very skeptical. She thought I was managing my diabetes very well and anyway, Mexico? Nevertheless, I proceeded. Right from the time I arrived in MBC, until my surgery on November 14, I could tell I was in the hands of expert and caring people. The care and attention I received post operatively beats anything I have experienced before in the US. Since I have been home, I am continuing to progress without any unusual problems. Any time I have a question, the dear people at MBC have been available very quickly. Now my internist has come around. She admitted she was wrong to dismiss the possibility of good care in Mexico, although, I have heard of some sketchy places there which is true anywhere. She agrees that I am doing very well and getting to much improved health. She says I am a "trailblazer." I recommend Dr. Ungson and Mexicali Bariatric Center most highly.
