Obesity & Me

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.

I was always skinny growing up. My dad called me beanpole and my sister chubby even though she really wasn't When I got married I was 105 pounds. Unfortunately I never really learned to deal with the negative things that happened to me thru life. With my 1st pregnancy I gained 70 pounds and didn't loose it all. Gained and kept more with 2nd pregnancy. Depression runs in my family and due to certain circumstances I have always battled it! After my 2nd son was born I was diagnosed with low thyroid - later told it was hashimotos. Also have a long list of other medical problems which ended up with me being on disability at the age of 43. Although I have lost a few pounds here and there thru the years it was always difficult and didn't stay off. Even when my doctor had put me on double the amount of prescription diet pills I only lost 1 pound. With a bad back making it difficult to exercise the weight just kept piling on. Sometimes I do think I use the weight as a shield against the world. I have very low self esteem and I don't really have friends. Being overweight is an excuse -- no one wants a fat friend right. I'd rather think that was it then the fact that people just don't like me.

What was (is) the worst thing about being overweight?

I feel very alienated from everyone. I'm very self conscious about how I look and I feel like people are judging me and probably talking behind my back. I feel like people don't want to be friends with the fat girl. Being overweight has definitely effected my family life in a negative way. As the weight piled on and the medical problems kept escalating I could no longer do a lot of activities with my kids or husband. I think this was very hard on them growing up. While my husband has always loved me thin or fat, I know he wants me to be healthy. He has never been one to give me a hard time for being overweight.

If you have had weight loss surgery already, what things do you most enjoy doing now that you weren't able to do before?

I only had the surgery a few weeks ago but I already have more energy - looking forward to lots more!
