Question:
Does anyone crave sweets?

I am 4wks post op and have been craving something sweet after I eat, especially at night. I admit that this was my normal behavior before surgery, but I thought that was due to poor diet choices. Please help if anyone has had the same problem. Thankyou    — nuna (posted on April 9, 2004)

To be honest, yes. I have a weekness for chocolate that I give into on occasion. I tell everyone where ever I am about having the surgery and that helps me avoid some sweets. People do watch you and what you eat. I know this isn't taking responsibility for my actions but it does help me.

When I was newly post-op, I could not STAND anything even remotely sweet which freaked me out since my pre-op weakness was most definitely sweets! I'm 18 months out now and yes, I crave sweets again! I deal with it with protein shakes - kinda hard to complain about wanting sweets when I essentially drink 4 chocolate shakes a day! Another thing that helps is a herbal supplement called Relora that you can get from Vitalady. Curbs carb cravings and seems to work well for me. For me, the deal breaker is just NOT giving in and eating sugar or carbs because they will absolutely not "hit the spot" or help me get over the craving - it will just make it worse! Try to limit carbs and have a nice thick chocolate protein shake and see how that works! :)

Yes, definitely. Don't give in though, it only makes it worse!

I love chocolate anything....that said, yes I crave it like the air I breath, do I give in..well when I do it is sugar free, so yes I do. But you have got to watch that also, too much can put on pounds not to mention the bloating and gas. I still love the no sugar added fudge pops, after a meal I eat one or two. There are lots of sugar free things out there just read the labels and use your common sense.

Sweets were my downfall before surgery and I still struggle but really don't want them as much as I used to. I've found great substitutes, like my protein bars and fruit. My favorite dessert is cottage cheese and strawberries with Splenda. Yum! Gets me my sweet fix and my protein at the same time, while not packing on the fat and calories. Fruit is a great substitute and protein bars are great because they are sweet and rich and make you feel like you're eating the real deal. I'm a night-time sweet eater too and these have saved my life!

I'm pre op and I crave sweets like mad after a meal. Another thing I've noticed is that when I start eating I feel like I could eat more, much more than what is in front of me. I feel like what I've got on my plate isn't going to be enough. I've noticed, however, that if I simply wait a half an hour or so after eating, both problems disappear. Which makes me think that what must be happening is that when I eat my insulin goes up. That's what creates the hunger and the sugar cravings. If I wait a while after eating, my insulin level must go down again because the hunger and the sugar cravings ease up. I would try just waiting a while after eating, drink some water or something and see if the craving goes away. Lynda D.

Try sugar free popsicles and fudgesicles. DH and I eat at 2-4 per night. Also Orville Redenbacher Smart Pop Kettle Corn is sweet, salty, crunchy, and a good source of fiber. Blessings!
