Question:
How can I jump-start my losing again?

I am 2 years post-op. I stopped losing weight at about 6 months post and nothing I do seems to help. I do alot of exercising such as: ride an exercise bike(hard) for 90 min.5x a week, work on a Health Rider for 20 min. 5x a week, and go to Curves 5x a week. I should be burning alot more calories then I take in every day but can't seem to lose anymore weight. I watch what I eat carefully, I'm still only taking in 600-800 calories every day. My doc does'nt have any idea what could be the problem. He sent me for an upper GI but said that everything looked normal and maybe I should exercise more. I don't think I should exercise more than 2 1/2 hours a day!! Does anyone have any suggestion that may help? I'm open for any help at all!! Please send your replys to [email protected] Thanks, Vicki Mize    — vmize (posted on February 9, 2004)

Should you be at 1500 calories a day now? How many grams of protein do you do in a day? I get stumped by people doing so much activity on a starvation diet. Best of luck.

Honey, You need to eat. Im 11 months post-op and im getting in on a good dat 1200-1400. Your body is in a starvation mode, and the scale is not going to go down until u eat more. What u take in your exercise right out and your body is not getting nothing. EAT SWEETIE....PROTEIN, WATER,VEGGIES

Vicki, I'm with the other posters...you need to UP your calories! Your metabolism has slowed to a crawl on 800 cpd. No one could lose weight on an extended diet like that. I agree: 2-1/2 hours of exercise a day is (probably more than) enough. Instead, get yourself in the 1200-1500 range, and watch the scale start dropping. Good luck!

Hi Vicki I think 2 1/2 hrs of exercising a day is plenty myself. I suggest that you make an appointment with an endrocrinologist, they specialize with the internal organs of the body. Tell this doctor that you want to have an extensive Thyroid Check done. There are several different tests that are run to check and see if the Thyroid is functioning properly. A regular doctor will not run the correct tests to see if there is a Thyroid problem, they only run the test that checks the TSH levels. I have a bad Thyroid and all of the regular tests that my regular doctors over the years had done all came back in the normal range. By going to the endcrinologist I found out that my Thyroid works only when it wants too and not all of the time like it should. I now take Synthroid 2mg per day. Deb

Vicki: I can't believe your doctor didn't tell you to eat more! 600-800 calories is not enough! You're in starvation mode. You're already doing more exercise than you should have to, so that can't be it. Please try eating a little more, especially protein, I'll bet that will help. Best wishes. Vicki, your profile stopped in 02, and I went there to see if it would fill in some of my questions...please update it. I am also 2 years post-op and at my goal. I certainly eat alot more than you and work out alot less than you do. So, I ask you, what are you eating? How often are you eating? Protein? How is your water? And is your goal weight reasonable? Many post-ops are already at a reasonable weight but they want to meet the insurance charts (which are ridiculously low) or want to get down to the lo single digits. I'd suggest eating something, mostly protein based every few hours (fueling that metabolism), up the water, up the calories and cut back a little on the exercise and see what that does. Keep us updated (profile!!)

Vickie, all the other answers sound reasonable and good advice, but you should also do a complete blood work up with a Endocrinologist as well as see an certified nutritionist.

if you are excersizing that much, eating so little...perhaps part of the "problem" is that you are building muscle and muscle weighs more than fat...so you could be losing but the scales aren't moving much due to the muscle weight? just a guess...i'm no doctor
