Question:
Which type of iron is best absorbed, which is kindest to our system, what is carbonyl
Iron and hemoglobin is low as per lab results. Doc says ferrous gluconate, 300 mg, 5X a day for 3 months then do labs again. Does this sound right to you guys? I'm not drop dead tired, didn't even know I was low on iron. I want to take iron that is well tolerated. It is more important to me to not be sick from the iron I take even if I have to take smaller doses more often. I have searched the internet for iron info and have not found anything on carbonyl iron. What is it exactly? Please advise on taking iron. — mary ann T. (posted on October 30, 2003)

I have not had any type of WLS at this point, but I CAN speak to the
wonderfulness of carbonyl iron. Iron supplements have always made me
nauseous, even multi-vitamins with iron. I started taking Feosol (bought at
Wal-Mart) about a month ago, and it's great! It gives me no side effects at
all - no upset tummy. I always do take it with a meal, however. It's the
first iron supplement I've been able to completely tolerate. If iron makes
you sick to your stomach, Feosol is probably worth trying.

Carbonyl iron is very gentle. Iron is always taken with vit C, never with
dairy, caffeine, other vites, minerals or meds. But SOME brands are bound
with lactose (um, dairy?) and are not tolerated well for that reason. If
one brand doesn't work for you, try another brand.
