Question:
Does anyone else get sick from protein shakes??

I like the pro blend 55 chocolate but have also tried spirutein and one other from gnc. No matter what I mix it with, milk or water, I feel like its a brick in my grouchy pouch. I've tried drinking normally, sipping, straw, no straw..ice..no ice. Tried everything and I get so nauseous I have to go lay down. My friend told me the powder smells exactly like the protein you feed a baby calf. Can you say Ick??? I dont THINK that her comment has anything to do with my nausea........    — kathy B. Take a look at the amount of sugar. I'm pre-op and in the process of evaluating protein drinks. I ended up looking at drinks that didn't contain any sugar. I figured that I can migrate from mixing water to using milk when my stomach can tolerate sugar better. The other issue that I've read about is drinking too fast. The guideline that was giving to me was to drink 4-6 ounces over 20 minutes.

Yes, I get sick from any protein shakes. Never could figure out why. I just gave up. Got tired of it. SO, I tend to do bars to supplement my protein intake. There are some great ones out there, you just need to make sure they are low in sugar and carbs. I've yet to have a problem with any bars, but some I can only eat a half of due to sugar content worries. They are REALLY filling! I prefer EAS bars- they don't taste like candy bars. But, that's just me. So, if you can't get your protein in from food, try bars and see if that works better than the shakes.

most make me gag too. but if i add mocha cuppichino coffee drink mix (sugar free of course) it covers up that taste and i an usually get most of it down. soy is worse for me it is gritty and they all stink to me as well! oi have tried many kinds and now opt for a cheap type because they are not so different in numbers and they all taste foul but i choke it down every morning or try too! i will vomit anything with soy now even tofu which i always loved.

I have been using Pro Score 100 (chocolate) since my the end of my second month post op once a day for breakfast. It is thick and delicious. 2 scoops in 6 oz cold water and three ice cubes in the blender-2 g fat,32 g protein, 3 g Carbs(not bad). My surgeon gave me the OK.

YES! I would get nauseous and throw up almost every time I drank one. I just experimented a bit and found UNJURY which is advertised on this site. It mixes very fast and leaves no clumps and pockets of powder. I put the vanilla in a glass jar with SF Tang and make a creamsicle. You can order it at www.unjury.com.

I started feeling the same way about the protien drinks. Turns out a lot of them have artificial sweetners in them and I had developed an intolerance to Sorbitol and Splenda. I never had trouble with Splenda pre-op, in fact it was my sweetner of choice. I now can tolerate Nutrasweet, but I really don't like the taste. So I switched to protien bars and I also try to get my protien from real food sources. I concede that is difficult and mosat days I can get in around 50 grams when I probably should do more. I also find I can tolerate the Boost high protien drinks in a can better than the mix yourself type of powders. I did obtain some protien "Nectar" mix that was great but I cannot remember where I ordered it from - I am sure it was a link on this site.
