Question:
I am only four days post-op and still on clear liquids only, and I'M SO HUNGRY.
I called the office to see if I could transit to the full liquids, because I'm hungry, and they told me not to. For the first couple of days after the surgery, even ice chips felt like they gave me heartburn, but today I had almost no problem sipping liquids all day. I drank only apporved things on my list, got in over 90 ounces in clear liquids and water, and 575 calories. I am so surprised that I feel so hungry! Anybody else have that experience initially? — Melissa D. (posted on April 17, 2003)

I was the same way. I"m now 10 days post op and not hungry at all. My
hunger only lasted a day or two after I was discharged from the hospital.

I too felt the same way for the first week post-op and then I was moved to
more solid foods which I couldn't tolerate but I think knowing that I could
have them helped take away the mental hunger that I was experiencing. Day
5 post-op was my worst day...I salivated over every food comercial that
there was....LOL. After that it was all down hill. Now I am 4 weeks
post-op, down 41 lbs, NEVER hungry and rarely have those cravings for those
forbidden foods! Good luck...it does get better!

As soon as you get on full liquids you will feel soooo much better. I was
in tears on day 6 of the clear liquids. You hear everyone complain about
protein drinks but on day seven it was like drinking nectar! You will feel
better soon. Popsicles helped me a lot because I felt as though I was
actually eating. It probably was in my head(the hunger) but I was miserable
and FELT hungry! At 3 months though I almost never feel hungry. Good Luck!!

They are right, it's all in the head! I litterly cried for a week or two
craving food and it did pass. When I started food, I never ate, it was like
food became a chore and tasted crappy, Doctor said I did'nt eat enough and
was losing too fast(never thought I'd hear that lol). Now I have taste and
appitite back, but I don't worship food anymore and I feel good not living
life for food. Good luck!

For me, it wasn't in my head. Right after surgery, I was physically hungry
to the point of pain AND the head hunger drove me nuts as well. I did live
through it and eventually all the hunger subsided. I had fear that I was
so weird because I was so hungry and I had read post after post on here of
experiencing NO hunger after surgery. My hunger didn't subside for a few
weeks even when I started to add more foods. The hunger went away at about
3.5 weeks and then several weeks went by when I had no idea if I was hungry
or not. Now at 14 weeks I can tell the difference between head hunger and
real hunger and I'm not too plagued by either most days.

Eat ice pops. Edy's No Sugar added are THE BEST or Breyer's NSA. I'm 4
weeks post op. As you advance to the other "eating" stages, the
hunger will subside. I, unlike others here, think you ARE physically
hungry AND emotionally hungry. It's only now that I've advanced to mushy
solids (soft fish, etc.) that I don't feel AS hungry every minute of the
day, like I did in the first 3 weeks. Busy yourself with
something/anything! Good luck. It gets better.

YES! The first few days after surgery and after I came home I can't say I
was hungry...I was willing to pass it off to head hunger. But as the
surgery pain wore off and my stomach still ached, then it hit me, HARD! I
WAS starving! (What an amazing concept it was to have REAL hunger pains!)
And to make it worse I was on clear liquids three days longer than I
would've been otherwise because of scheduling. When the doctor ok'd me for
full liquids, that helped somewhat--after my first protein drink my tummy
didn't hurt anymore. This morning I made an egg custard (very liquidy) and
my tummy is definitely happy! I am glad I stuck with the liquids until I
was told to move on, however, because I would have hated to *cheat* and
have something go wrong. Tomorrow night I get to advance to purees...can't
wait. Hang in there. It'll be worth it,

I am going through this NOW. I am exactly one week post op today, and am on
full liquids, and am constantly hungry!! Maybe some people have "head
hunger", but there are some of us who are truly HUNGRY!! And I am one
of them!! My tummy feels so empty, and gets that burny/growly sensation,
just like it did pre op when I was starving. I hate this feeling, and even
cried this morning for fear I will be a total failure!! BUT, as I calmed
down, I told myself to STAY STRONG, and maybe when I am able to move on to
a more satisfying stage, things WILL get better!! I suggest you try to do
the same. :o)
