Question:
Has anyone used prepared Slimfast?
Have you used prepared Slimfast in a can post-op? Would this be a good way to get additional protein/vitamins in? The nutrional stats on the can states lots of vitamins, but also alot of Sodium (220mg) and Sugars (35mg) per 11oz can. The Protein content is 10g. What has been your experience? Thanks! — Karen H. I don't use the prepared Slim Fast but at my surgeon's instance I use the
Lactose Free Slim Fast powder. It is soy protein - has more protein, less
sugar than the regular. You mix 2 scoops of powder with 8 ounces of water.
I love the Mocha - I look forward to it every day. I was using a protein
bar but had some digestive problems (not surgery related) and the surgeon
switched me to this as it is easier to digest.

I tried slimfast pre-surgery but I'm lactose intolerant and couldn't handle
it. Also 35 grams sounds like way too much sugar. I would bet it would
cause dumping. If I eat 10 grams of sugar (1/2 yogurt...which never
bothered me pre-surgery) I feel a little queazy. So I think 10 is my
personal cutoff but everyone is different.

I use real protein made with water. I get 32g protein in about 8 oz, 0g
sugar. I can have as many of those as I want! Makes it just over $1 per
serving.

I had developed an intolerance to milk after surgery and had a hard time
with the drink early on. I am now 17 months post op and tolerate prepared
slimfast very well...in fact I started a week and a half ago to help jump
start the weightloss and I'm down 2 lbs so far. I however can't eat the
allowed fruit with it...too much sugar, I start to feel nauseous. -Kim open

My doctor and his staff say that the premade Slim-fast have too much sugar
in them. The only Slim-fast they recommend is the one that says
Lactose-free, SOY-protein.

Whey protein is the easiest for WLS patients to absorb. It is predigested
and is better than soy. 30 grams at a time is all we can really absorb,
and need it at least twice if not more times per day. There are cans of it
ready-made at health food stores, and powders too, and liquid concentrate.
And - children's chewable vitamins are sugary. There are many liquid
multivitamins out there. That's what I use - all liquid vitamins and
minerals.
