Question:
I am 3 weeks post op today and have had no complications whatsoever. I am supposed to

be on a soft diet, but today I ate 1 scrambled egg with cheeze and three motzarella sticks (for breakfast and dinner). They were great!! Am I hurting myself or hindering my weight loss by skipping to normal food so soon?    — darlene B. (posted on October 23, 2002)

Hi. Congrats on no complications so far! I was just like you, able to eat foods right away. I don't think your hindering your weight loss. Eggs and cheese (such as cottage or mozz. or american) are considered soft foods, and I was eating those things a few weeks post-op as well. Be careful with mozzarella sticks, though, b/c they do have breading and are fried, so i would limit foods like that. Eggs and cheese are a great source of protein, though! For the soft food phase, I was eating SF/FF yogurt, eggs, cheese, soup, mashed potatoes (once in a while b/c of the carbs) SF/FF pudding with added powdered milk for protein, etc. Keep up the good work! :)

If you mean the string cheese type moz sticks that aren't deep fried I say more power to you. Low fat, easy to chew mushy and full of protein. One of my favorite foods and has been since about week 2! I was on solids week 2 (much to my surgeons consternation)...but my theory, for what it's worth, is I treat my stomach like I did my children's when they were babies. I started them on fruits and cereals at 6 weeks old. Waaaay before the ped doc recommended. If you tolerate it and are careful, you should be fine!

You lasted longer than I did. I was cheating after 7 days. As long as you feel fine you are not hurting yourself or hindering your weight loss. Before surgery did you ever have a day when you ate so little?

I was on normal food 10 days out, with Dr.'s thumbs up. I felt a hell of a lot better and actually had some energy. Open RNY 4/29/02 -102 lbs.

Hi, I'm 2+ years post-op, but when I was on the "soft foods" stage of my plan, scrambled eggs and string cheese were on the list of items I could eat. The list also included the insides of baked potatoe, baked.broiled fish, canned veggies and fruits, etc. I think you're OK. Heidi

Well, scrambled eggs, cheese and mozzerella sticks were soft foods my doc reccommended. Plus, think of how soft things get after being chewed so much. More soft foods that were wonderful to eat were refried beans with cheese, and malt-o-meal made with UNsweetened soy milk. You won't hurt yourself if you eat very slowly, chew very well, and keep your portions very tiny. I also used a single chopstick to eat with to slow myself down. (you bet it works!) Congratulations on being a new postie, and good luck!
