Question:
Diet I got at hospital says NO red jello does anyone know why it is excluded.

my guess is, the red dye could show up in stool or emesis, which would look
like blood.
by the way, sugar free jello brand jello, ready made, is delicious. i keep
it on hand all the time. it helps the sweet cravings and counts as liquid
intake.

No red jello so if you have a leak they can tell the difference from blood
or what ever --- to jello. At least that is what my dietician said.

Just like the others said, since you just had stomach/bowel surgery you
need to be able to tell if you have bleeding. Red jello or kool-aid can
cause your emesis or stools to be red.

This may or may not be related, but when my son had gastrointestinal
bleeding, the doctor said not to give him anything like red jello, red
koolaid, etc because he wanted to make sure there would be no confusion
about what is coming out the end. The red koolaid turned his diarrhea an
alarming shade of red for several days and we couldn't tell if he was still
bleeding or if it was the koolaid until the lab results came back normal.
Luckily it was the koolaid and he is just fine.

To tell you a funny story about RED velvet cake... I have always had IBS
and diahrerra. I had made a red velvet cake and had a big piece of it. We
went out to dinner with my daughter-in-laws parents, had to run to the bath
and all that came out was RED BM. Scared me to death.. Went to the ER and
they check me out and I was fine, sent me home. On my way home I started
to laugh and my husband asked why. I told him about the red velvet cake and
we both laughed. So what goes in RED, comes out RED.
