Question:
Chop sticks!!!!!!!!!

Well I am about 7 weeks post op and I can eat eat eat(7oz) eat.... I have posted like 4 times about it. And I found something hat slowed me down and..by slowing down I felt full and did not eat as much.. I have been using chopsticks for every meal. Because think of this, the meet is the biggest part(protien) Then the vegies, and the rice,pasta,ect...I works great!!!!!!! Oh and I found that if the rice it to hard to pick up put some real cheese on them, and and it makes little balls that are easy,to pick up(but still very small)!!. Heck put a ton of stuff on you plate you will not want to eat it all after working with chop stiks for 40mins! Please post if others have tried and those who are going to!    — Amy M. Sounds like a great idea but why are you eating rice? it can really plug up your pouch. I don't know what type of surgery you had but it is usually forbidden for rny altho some docs use it. if yours allows it proceed very carefully.

Thanks for the tip.. You have to think im only eating about 1/2oz of rice over a 20-40min time frame. I was told by the doc that stuff like that as long as it is chewed good, will go down fine!!

I don't have a problem with eating too much, although if that ever comes to pass I'll keep your tip in mind! Thanks for sharing! My surgeon also does not restrict any food groups or any food. He anticipates that by the time you're a year out you should be eating everything you want, just in small quantities. I have personally had no problems with dumping off of any food, I always make sure to chew, and I have done great. I feel the way I did when I was thin, when I barely thought about food and only ate when my body said to-not when I said to. I eat till I'm full, usually only a couple bites of grilled chicken that I marinate in Fat Free Italian-yum! And following that, a couple bites of salad. But last night, I felt like eating something sweet-not Splenda sweet, but really sweet. I had one bite of vanilla ice-cream and did fine and felt content. I don't think it's healthy to plan on restricting yourself off any food group for all eternity. So if you do fine with rice and feel like having a little, then you go girl!

Also...why are you eating over 40 minutes? That's actually considered grazing and will, of course, allow you to eat MUCH more!

Amy Mixon said . . . <<Thanks for the tip.. You have to think im only eating about 1/2oz of rice over a 20-40min time frame. Japanese (sushi type) rice is the worst, altho most of 'em can do it. So, while I *love* sushi rolls, and teriyaki with rice, I don't do 'em anymore.

For whoever posted that taking 40 minutes to eat is considered grazing....that kind of comment is EXACTLY why it is so important for everyone, no matter who you are, to listen to YOUR surgeon and your surgeon/dietician only. BTC specifically tells you that you must take at least 30 minutes to eat a meal, so 40 min. is not grazing. For the original poster, sounds like you've hit on a marvelous idea to slow down the eating and not eat too much. I'm 3 years post-op and am going to get some chopsticks to keep at home! Bravo on the ingenuity of your idea! Good luck to you!

Again, listen to your surgeon. BTC never told me not to eat rice and I've never had a problem with it. Good luck!

I think this is a marvelous idea! We all come up with unique ways of alternating our eating. This is part of it. After all, we have to eat, we have to have the nutrition, so as we alter our food choices, why not change the way we eat it?! I've bought myself a whole bunch of small, fancy plates. Auctions and re-sale shops--garage sales too! I only need 1, they're just mine. Now I don't know if I could stand the frustration of chopsticks, but I'm thinking it might be fun. And prolonging the meal to 30 minutes plus is a good thing. I too went with BTC, and they do stress normal food. I eat rice, but I sure don't worry about it swelling-- I chew it real good---Know how long it takes to really chew rice? a while--trust me!! Good Luck!
