Question:
Protein in Seafood Salad?

Does anyone know if Seafood Salad is a good source of protein? I tried to look it up in my protein counter book, but could not find it. I know the mayonnaise is not great for you, I just was curious to know if there was a substantial amount of protein in it. Thanks! Kate (Open RNY 5/03 -91 pounds)    — Kate C. I don't the answer but I love it too! I think it would be pretty good. I sometimes make my own using the mock crab. Then I can use as little mayo as I want and adjust things like seasonings and throw in a few veggies too.

I agree with Kathy - make your own with the imitation crabmeat (or imitation lobster) - Hellman's makes a reduced-fat mayo called Just2Good! Reduced Fat Mayonnaise Dressing that is good (and it is the only mayo I don't dump on). Most of the time, I just skip the mayo and eat the imitation crabmeat as it is, though...JR

When I first had my surgery, I found that the seafood salad sold in the seafood department of Publix, to be just what the Doctor ordered.Just 6 grams of protein per 1/2 cup serving though.

Yes it is a good source of protein. It got me through several times when nothing else "sat" well in the pouch. I make my own but a word of warning, some imitation crab meat has added sugar. I found this out the hard way. ~Sidney~ Open RNY 10-23-02 down 120+ and counting

The amount of seafood in the salad determines the protein content. If you make your own, you can control the amount - and probably get more than in commercially prepared. And, you can control the amount of fat by using low fat mayonnaise or salad dressing. Anytime you eat seafood, you are getting a lot of protein.

According to the USDA database at http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/cgi-bin/nut_search.pl, a 3 oz portion has between 10 and 13 grams of protein, depending on whether you're looking at the fake crabmeat or what they label "Fish, surimi".
