Question:
Revison question

I had Vertical Gastroplasty in 1985 would like to have either the Lap or Open RNY. Has anyone had a revision? I have heard it is not real safe because of the possible scare tissue...and that your other organs could be damge during the surgery because of the adhesions...    — Deborah L. Hi, Deborah, I had a stomach stapling back in 1984/ On 9/27/01 I had a revision to a lap rny/ I am so very pleased I cannot begin to tell you how happy I am w/it. When I went in for surgery on revision, I weighed 258/ I am 14 months out and I now weigh 154, which is the goal my Dr. set for me/ I am in a size 8, and I feel great! I did have a stricture at about 6 weeks and had to have a procedure to have it stretched but other than that I have had no problems/ Of course this has to be totally your decision, but I would do it again in a heartbeat, but I know that I won't have to because my eating habits are so much better w/this surgery/ With the stomach stapling I could hardly eat any solid foods, and now I can actually eat real food! Whatever you decide I wish you the best and will keep you in my prayers/ Patti Meadows/ -104 lbs. lap rny 9/27/01

Hi, I had a VBG in 1995, and was revised in July 2002. Both were done open and I did have a lot of adhesions according to the OR tech (which is a neighbor of mine). The revision lasted 1 1/2 hours long and consisted of the VBG takedown, removal of the adhesions and then performing the RNY. I did not have any complications and in fact, I got to go home a day earlier than a friend that had LAP RNY the same day I did (she had started running a fever). I too had a stricture that had to be dilated, but that was a very minor procedure and I am very glad I had the revision done. I have lost about half the weight I want to and I am about 5 months post op from the revision. Also, I wanted to add that the same surgeon performed both surgeries - Dr. Ferrari who works with Neweigh in Houston.
