Question:
unsure what some of the abbreviations/terms mean

I am researching WLS at this point and have seem many terms and abbreviations I have been curious about. A few I have attempted guesses at but just wanted to ask to be sure. What exactly is "dumping" and "PBing"? I know there are more I am just drawing a blank now...any that you can think of a newbie may not understand? Thanks    — Sunny C. Hello Sondra... Welcome to the board... The term 'dumping' can mean different things to different people... Basically it is when you eat something that disagrees with you and you either break out in a sweat... get weak... speed up your heartbeat... get nauseous... diarrhea... or some combo of 'em all... it is not fun... 'PBing' is a new one on me... Try a word search from the 'galllery' page and it will bring up all the past posts that mention that word... Keep us posted and Good Luck to you :-)

hiya, this is one explaination of it...well basically the symptoms: What is dumping syndrome? Dumping syndrome is caused by stomach contents moving too rapidly through the small intestine. Symptoms include: Feeling faint Sweats Weakness Nausea Rapid pulse Diarrhea Rumbling stomach Anxiety ---------------------- with a gastric bypass (roux-en-y), at least 2 feet of your small intestine is bypassed and that is where your body processes fats and sugars, so if you eat too much fat/sugar your body cannot process it and will try to push it through your system quickly to get rid of it and the above symptoms (some or all) will occur. the length of time between ingestion of the food and dumping occurring is usually pretty quick, for me about 10 minutes or so. when i dump i get sweaty, my heart races, i feel weak and shaky, sometimes short of breath and then it usually resolves with my having diareha (sorry to be explicit) and sometimes i'll feel like i need to lay down for awhile. you'll get to know your body and what will set off a dump. i haven't heard of the other term. feel free to email me anytime! good luck, kate open rny 6-14-01 pre op: 268lbs goal: 135lbs current: 130lbs

My doctor said that when you dump on sugar, what you are feeling is you blood sugar dropping. He said we absord sugar extremely fast postop which makes our bodies produce insulin too fast. The excess insulin causes you blood sugar to drop lower than normal, and that's what makes you feel bad. I asked a diabetic friend what she feels like when her sugar drops, and it sounded exactly like what dumping feels like to me. HTH. Karen P.
