Question:
3 yrs postop open RouenY - constant diarreah
I had open Rouen Y 3 years ago, and have kept the weight off. For the last year (literally) I have had diarreah. I have not had a formed stool in over a year, and even before that they were very soft formed. Is there a diet you are suppose to follow this far out? I eat whatever I want, like I use to, only smaller amounts and I avoid sugar and fat and dont drink with my meals. Would going back to the high protein diet I did at first help? Its becoming a problem as I work with the public and I am often the only one there to run a very busy store. I had a nurses follow up help and advice for the first 6 months, but now Im at a loss as to what I should be eating or avoiding. Any advice helpful and thanks — KissBabe (posted on August 11, 2005)

It's time to join the Grad list. No guarantee that you'll get the rest of
the wt off, but there's also the trick of maintaining the loss you have
achieved. There is a lot of combined long term experience on this list and
I'd recommend it in conjunction with this site and any local lists you
use.

This is a question for your doctor as it may not even be related to the
WLS. However, most doctors will also recommend getting more fiber in your
diet (my bro had this problem and this is what he was told) Since high
fiber foods are really not in our diet any longer, I would recommend using
a fiber supplement. There are several out there, but I would veer away
from most solubles (like Metamucil) as they become very thick and difficult
for us to get down. I use Benefiber because it has no taste and does not
get thick. However, see you PCP to rule out any other problems. Carmen

Do you by chance take prevacid or prilosec Rx? Sometimes If I dont take my
prevacid I get sorta get the loose stool too. These shut off the proton
pumps, in the old belly, and maybe you are just having so much protien,
that your body is producing the same amount of acid it needed to break down
the food before wls and now it just goes right on through, and thats what is
comming out. Check with your doctor. Many of us must use proton pump
inhibitors for the rest of our lives, and this also keep the acid from
bothering your old stomach, and possably causing ulcers in it. Good luck.

Wow, good to know. But I am 2 months out and as stopped up as can be! Good
luck, try fiber tablets. They actually help both ways.

Hi, this may no be your problem at all, but I do the very same thing. About
6-9 months out from my RNY, I got chronic diarreha. I saw my doc, she told
me it was fatty foods....NOT! I saw a specialist and she done a colonoscopy
twice before she found I had developed Chrohns. Now I take medicine and it
is controled. Just a thought.....
