Question:
Is there a protein bar out there for someone who is 4 weeks out?

I cannot find a protein drink that I like and I have given up on that...but I really wish there was a protein bar I could eat and get down easily. I used to eat Luna Bars before surgery for breakfast and I know they have too much sugar. But is there something else I can try???    — Denise D. (posted on August 1, 2003)

Assuming that you are not still on a restricted, soft food diet, they yes, there are bars you can try. Do you have a GNC near you? It's great to go there and buy one of several kinds to see what tastes best to you. In general, you should look for something with HIGH protein (20 or more grms)low sugar (under 10 grams, the lower the better) and moderate carb content (I consider that to be in the 20 g range or less) Ones I have tried that are good are UTurn or Detour, also EAS carb advantage. I generally can not eat a whole bar so I consider half a bar to be a serving. I'm sure many others will come up with suggestions too. Good luck!

hiya~ i highly recommend you experiment some more with protein drinks. i know most are disgusting but the whey protein drinks are highly absorbable and you do not want to deal with malnutrition. i have a list of supplements i use on my website: www.geocities.com/katebme2002 the protein bar i like is by Think Thin and it's the peanut butter crunch lite. i get them at trader joes. they are about $1.69 each. aren't you still on liquid or soft food? you may want to double check with your surgeon's office about what you are supposed to be eating right now. good luck, kate

I started the Atkins bars around 4 weeks post-op with MD's office's approval. The chocolate decadence and mocha bars aren't bad as is the Almond Brownie. They were easy to take to work and fit in my purse with no problems. If you can find the Atkins Morning Start Breakfast bars--cinnamon, apple, and chocolate chip are great. Atkins bars have more fiber than most of the others so that is a special extra. Also, don't give up on protein drinks. Have you tried the Whey stack? Not too bard--smoother than most. Go to Vita lady or wlssuccess and order samples in a lot of different flavors.

I'm pre-op and still trying to find a protein drink that I could stomach. I went to a vitamin store the other day and explained my dilemma to the lady there. She suggested Champion Whey Protein (I think that is what it is called. I know Champion was the name). It comes in a big container. She gave me several samples and suggested that I mix 1/2 banana creme with 1/2 chocolate. It was much better than the others that I have tried, including Carnation Instant Breakfast. Maybe this will help...good luck.

Try Carb Solutions (taste sensations) 23g protein, 15g carb, 1g sugar, a little high on fat, 11g, (but your not going to eat the whole bar in one sitting right,)very high vitamin content 30 to 50 percent of the RDA for vitamins and minerals. I'm still on soft foods, but I'm having a hard time getting my protein so I just ate about 1/16 of the bar just to see if I could stomach it. It taste really good and I didn't have a problem. It can't hurt to give it a try. I'm gonna check out their website that's listed on the package. CarbSolutions.com Good Luck
