Question:
How many carbs can I have daily?

My Dr., or nutritionist has never given me a number, or even a sample menu. I have been trying to avoid carbs completely but noticed on the Gastric Bypass diet website a sample menu that added up to 97 carbs for day. Can someone please help me with the amount and the difference of complex versus plain old carbs? I did cheat a little this weekend and had a dinner roll. I noticed that I dropped 3lbs that day. My weight loss had been stalled for 2 weeks. I had open RNY 3 mnths ago and have lost 66 lbs. Thanks    — Sue B. (posted on April 16, 2001)

Well, here is my dietician's response. Isn't it funny how doctors all say different things? LOL. Mine says to eat your proteins first. When choosing your protein, make sure there is no more that 18grams of carbs. She said it evens out pretty well because if you eat 1/4 cup of some protein item and it has 15gr of carbs., you should be pretty full and won't eat much of other things, maybe fruit or whatever. Same thing for your next meal, and so on. So I guess the 97 carbs mentioned, would be about right. The dietician told me to not worry about that or calories or fat. She stressed about eating the protein and just not going over the 18gr on any one thing. It should work itself out as long as you eat healthy. Hope this helps.

My doctor advised me to follow the Pritiken Diet. This diet calls for 75-80% Carbs, 10-15% Protein, and 10% Fat. The diet can be purchased from a book store or Amazon.Com.
