Question:
I'm 3mo post op and down 62 pounds, I have changed my eating habbits,
I do not eat candy, sweets.....But the only thing I have not gave up is Coke:( I have at leat two cans a day with lots of ice. How bad is this, I mean I'm still loosing weight. Is there anyone else in a similiar situation and is just fine or is this really bad? — Maribelle C. (posted on January 14, 2004)

the weight IS going to come off no matter what the first couple of months.
then after that is is very slow. why not take advantage of this time. it
all comes down to which is more important to you.....2 cans of coke or to
get to goal.

My question is, Diet Coke or what kind? My doctor said if I want to try
sodas go ahead but suggested pouring it into a glass first to expel some of
the fizz. I would not drink regular soda. I did try one swallow of Diet
Coke today, because someone left one open on the kitchen counter. Although
I was addicted to it, I haven't had it for 1 week and the swallow tasted
nasty. I know it's a hard thing to give up, but to get the most of your
tool you should try. God Bless.

Coke is not good in a number of ways. First, 2 cans of coke will have 320
non-nutritious calories, and that's if you have only 2. Second, the high
sugar content can cause you to crave other carbs that aren't good for you.
Third, coke has caffeine which is a diuretic. At 3 months post op, it's
hard enough to get 64 oz of water, but for every one cup of beverage with
caffeine, you need to drink an additional 2 cups of water to make up the
fluid that the caffeine is causing you to lose. I think the fizz isn't good
for the pouch either, but I don't know for sure on that one. I would work
it out of your eating plan and take full advantage of your honeymoon
period.

You're taking about regular Coke- not Diet!?! If it was diet- I'd say go
ahead. Regular- NO WAY!! Let me put this clearly. Liquid empty calories
are the worst for WLSers. Caloried beverages are the worst NO NO. Don't
ruin your chances for continued success by this one silly thing. So what
if you're still loosing weight. You would loose more without the Coke. If
you did get to goal, the caloried liquids would be a source of trouble and
re-gain for you. Just go to diet. You'll get used to it. Oh by the way-
you say you don't eat sweets- what do you think coke is? SUGAR honey.
Just because you drink it and don't chew it, doesnt make it any different.

You may not think you're eating candy, but you *drink* it! The massive
amount of sugar in Coke *is* slowing down your weight loss, and will speed
up your re-gain.

If you continue to drink all this sugar, you *will* regain, count on it.

Stop now, while you can still lose easily, and avoid the heartbreak that's
sure to come from it.

Hey, I'm also 3 months post-op, down 68 pounds-so were about the same! I
wanted to comment on this because I also drink regualr soda. I have a
Mountain Dew, not every day, but I do drink it, and have done fine with it.
I'm not condoning drinking pop all the time or what not, but I am able to
sympathize with you. I'm sure there are better options out there, I'm sure
you know there are better options out there, but you know what? We do what
we do. As long as your surgeon is ok with it, then I say live and let live.
I wish you continued success.
By the way, I read someone mentioning that caffeine is a diuretic-this is
false. Caffeine IS a diuretic-but only in those who do not drink it
regularly. If she's drinking 2 cans of pop a day, she can add that to her
fluid intake. I will find and post a link to that claim. I was just reading
about it, so I wanted to correct that.
