Question:
How did I hold so much popcorn?

I was watching TV tonight and without even thinking, I ate almost a whole bag (my sister-in-law ate one cup) of microwave popcorn!!! I am one year out and usually stop eating before I ever feel full because I for one haven't felt that full feeling very often. I just stop when I think I've had enough. I am transected. I just wonder why I can eat so much at one time. I am afraid to really try other things to see exactly how much I can hold. Has anyone one year out ate a whole bag of popcorn at once???? (I had surgery June 12, 2002 and I am down 118 pounds.)    — Ju Ju P. (posted on July 8, 2003)

I am 15 months out and ate a whole bag yesterday- NOBODY shared it with me! I was shocked to. But it chews to nothing! I figured that is why- I had the terrible muchies yesterday and ate everything insite, but today can hardly eat anything-

One of the reasons my surgeon says no popcorn is because we can eat it forever and not feel it. It turns into nothing when you eat it; but the calories are still there. I've heard that you can take an 8 ounce glass of milk and put popped a lot of popped corn into it and it will never displace the milk; the popcorn just dissolves into nothing. I try (and I say try) to avoid it.

Julia, popcorn smushes down.....not too much in the way of volume. It's lots of carbs, so I wouldn't want to do that too often. But I bet you know that, huh? ;) I did try popcorn one day and I was able to really put it away too. So I make it a practice NOT to have that kind of stuff around. As a once in a while treat when you are away from home, is one thing. Congratulations on your weight loss. Liberation, huh? (Open RNY 10/30/02 down 170 lbs)

I eat a ton of popcorn and enjoy it!! Since 3 months out (now 11). I do try to stick to air popped though. My nutritionist did an experiment where she popped a bag, then crushed it with a rolling pin (chewing), then put in just a little water (saliva) and measured it -- it was just over 1/2 cup!

best tasting fiber! I eat it at least once a week (pre-op I hardly touched the stuff).

Popcorn is mainly 'just air' when you chew it it chews to nothing. What I homed in on on your post was the 'not feeling full and stopping' THIS on the other hand coul be a stoma 'sign'; to 'test' try the cottage cheese test. Its been used to 'test' the size of a pouch. If you can eat 'alot' of cottage cheese; then I would advise you to see your physician for an upper gi test to offically test your pouch function. YOU on the other hand are using 'control' which great.

I love popcorn! I am able to down a whole bag of microwaved popcorn in one seting. It does satisfy my chewing urges! But I know it is not a great idea to ht the carbs like that. My compromise has been to buy the SNACK SIZE bags of microwave popcorn. Just don't ask me to share it! :)
