Question:
Water loading...good or bad?
I'm a little confused. I've read that water loading (ie drinking a lot of water really fast 1 hour before having a meal) is a good idea as it helps up eat less and stay full longer...and I've also read that it does just the oppostie. Now I know it can't stretch the pouch because water doesn't sit in the tummy long enough. And I know I should be drinking a lot in between meals. (I am still pre-op). So which is? Water load or no water load? — Renee B. (posted on April 23, 2003)

Water loading is something recommended when you are further post-op and not
for new post-ops. By drinking as fast as youcan and as much as you can at
one time, it causes the pouch to extend temporarily which gives you that
full feeling for a short period of time. Its meant to get your mind off of
food! It does work and many of us use it, though I don't do it an hour
before meals, just any time I want to make hunger go away when its not time
to eat yet!

Water loading was never effective for me although I have heard that some
people do it. Of course it's a good way to get in all your fluids but I
found that it kept me in a constant "food" frame of mind. Is it
time to water load? Is it too soon? Is it too late? It was just
frustrating and ineffective for me. However, if it works for other folks I
say - go for it. Just not too soon after a meal or you'll wash out your
pouch. Best wishes!

Renee, I am 8 mos out, and YES, I AM TOTALLY FOR WATER LOADING! I am never
full and don't get full easily. My nutrionist (who has done a ton of
reseatch on obesity and WLS) suggests that I drink a TON up to 5 minutes
before I eat. Also, for me, when I feel as though I can keep eating and I
am not yet full, i will drink a bunch right in the middle of my meal. it
instantly fills me up. Good Luck, Heather (Open RNY 8-15 - 305/198/150)

I drink as much as I can until about 5 minutes before I eat. I tend to eat
too fast and in turn eat too much but water loading helps me feel full
faster so I dont over do it. I do wait at least 30 mins after I eat to
drink again. Works for me but I'm sure everyone is different. BTW: I
didnt try this until I was at least 4 months out. Good luck to you.
