Question:
Is there anyone that doesn't drink protein shakes or eat the bars?

Can we get enough protein without supplements? I was able to tolerate the drinks but now they absolutely make me gag now!! Any suggestions? Thanks a bunch Open gastric 12/10/02 65lbs gone ;-)    — Pam J. (posted on February 20, 2003)

I don't use protein bars or shakes very often. This far out you ought to be able to get a good amount of protein from food. Just make sure you eat small, frequent meals and protein every time. As you are probably not eating a whole lot right now, your meals should be mostly protein. As you get further out and can eat more (face it, it will happen :) you can comfortably fit plenty of protein in with small amounts of other stuff that you just "want" to eat. I had the following goals: 1/4 cup or less at meals = 45 grams of protein a day, 1/2 cup = 60-70 grams, 1 cup or more = 100 grams. The more you eat the easier it is. 1/2 cup of chicken has 20+ grams of protein. If you need help establishing how much food is "x" grams of protein, www.fitday.com is a free online site where you can record what you eat and get the protein/carb/fat count. Its only drawback is that it doesn't count sugar grams. Hope this helps!

I concur, I don't eat the bars and my labs came back fine. I eat chicken, seafood, fish, beans, cottage cheese and so forth. In the beginning I used the shakes and Procel, but now I am able to eat my protein. Some days I don't get it all in, but I average quite nicely. I have slipped in a little diet soda which is a no no... so an pledging more water...

My surgeon actually recommends against protein drinks or bars after the first month, but they've always made me gag, so I've never used them. I did have a protein bar once to replace my regular breakfast but got sick on it! My blood work came back yesterday and all is perfect. Post op RNY 10/15/2002.

15 months post op Open RNY / -135 lbs/current weight 118 lbs I tried a protein shake once and it made me GAG so I have never tried another. I am also not able to tolerate many meats, they make me sick, so I eat alot of eggs, cheese and ground chuck. All my labs are good and I feel GREAT!

My docs protocol was to drink protein shakes for 8 weeks after surgery..after that he wanted me to get protein from food. Unnecessary calories he says...I am 16 mos out and my labs have always been fine. I actually couldn't even tolerate the shakes the whole 8 weeks...I agree-I had a gag fest every time! Good luck to you!

I only had to drink protein shake for the first month, after that,my surgeon told me that she wanted me to get my proteins from food, and there was no need for the protein shakes. I'm 17 mos post, had all my check ups and each check up my nurtistionist told me that my protein level were fine (she said apparently I'm eating). I don't eat protein bars either. For breakfast I have eggs , lunch dinnerhavechicken(all diffent kind of way) and snack something high in protein like tuna fish, sardines . 130 pounds lost, so I'm not doing too bad. Good luck. Ask your nurtistionist or surgeon for advice,

My doctor said I could use them if I wanted. But he doesn't make us or suggest it. He said if its needed after tests then we'll talk. I am 6months out and my protein levels were all in range. So i don't think it's that big of a deal. And I'm not gonna put myself through that nasty tasting stuff..lol I suggest just eating a decent amount of protein in food every day. I don't think that way, it's almost like automatic habit...

I've never had a protein drink or bar. I'm down 80 pounds in 6 months. I've had no hair lost either. My doctor recommends 60 grams of protein daily.

I HATE PROTEIN BARS. THEY ARE LIKE DOG FOOD. MY BROTHER SWEARS BY THE ZONE BARS BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT MUSHY. I ALSO DONT REALLY LIKE THE SHAKES. I ASKED MY SURGEON IF I SHOULD SUPPLIMENT THE SHAKES WHEN I DONT EAT ENOUGH PROTEIN, SHE SAID DEFINATELY NOT, AND THAT IT WOULD SLOW DOWN MY WEIGHT LOSS.

I have never tried any of the protien drinks, and any of the bars that I have tried were in my humble opinion were GROSS!. My nutritionist actually perfers us to get the protein via food and not shakes and bars. Good luck
