Question:
I am only 5 days post op, and I am fortunate to realize this is normal,

But my question is how long does the post-op nausea last? I can not STAND the sight or smell of food. It's awful, and of course I think I'll always be like this!! Help!    — Joyce M. (posted on October 5, 2002)

As far as I know it could be caused by the anistesia ( sorry can't spell) they used during the surgery. Give it time. But ask your Dr to be sure it is'nt something else. God bless you during your journey.

Joyce, I'm 5 days post-op today as well. Lap RNY. I still don't have much of an appetite and my doctor said that I should expect that to last up to 3 weeks. I find that the best thing I've been able to "enjoy" is the No-Sugar-Added Carnation Instant Breakfast (chocolate) made with skim milk. I heard that product mentioned by several folks here and find that it's the best thing I've tasted (and actually "wanted") since surgery. I do think it eventually will get better for you, hang in there--I plan to. I hope your recovery process and healing are going well.

Ask your doctor for some anti-nausea medication. I was on some at first but I can't remember the name. It worked really good. Also, try sugar free popsicles and fudgesicles they were my favorite the first couple of weeks. Carnation Instant Breakfast doesn't really have much protein. Check out www.protein-solution.com

This new post-op doesn't need your sales pitch, Linda (frankly, I am getting tired of people promoting this product and that product when they seem to have a financial interest in doing so - that's spam). My surgeon and nutritionist both recommend the CIB NAS for new post-ops. The primary goal of new post-ops is to get their water/fluids in. Protein is secondary. And later on, it's always desirable to get your protein in via food sources rather than supplements.

Are you drinking your water? When someone complaines about nausea in my support group--the answer is always, "drink your water and it will improve"..good luck

Are you still on pain meds? They put me on oxycodone because of an allergy to coedine, and the oxy made me so nauseas. Every smell, even normal things, made me vomit. Or rather dry heave. Finally, I just went off all the meds completely and felt much better. I think pain is much better than nausea. Maybe try switching pain meds if you are still taking them.

Hey! I am 10 days post op today (10/10). I just wanted to say that I was so sick ever since the surgery that I wouldn't even get off the couch. I couldn't eat, drink, see or smell food without vomiting. I called the dr. office at least three times about it. Of course it was normal, but I am an overly babied person. Finally today I woke up and I felt great. I had 4 meals today and drank water in between. I hope this feeling hits you soon!!!
