Question:
Please advise which of these is okay to take...
Can a post-op take either ferrous sulfate or ferrous gluconate? And why/why not? And is you're anemic, how much of which should we take? — careywatkins (posted on May 30, 2001)

The best iron for gastric bypass patients is Ferrous Fumerate. It is the
easiest absorbed and it doesn't cause tummy problems. Stay away from
Ferrous Sulfate, that causes problems in regular stomachs! Ferrous
gluconate is ok, but it doesn't contain as much elemental iron as the
ferrous fumerate, so your best bet is ferrous fumerate.

Or polysaccharide (150mg elemental per pill) or carbonyl (25mg per pill).
The fe sulfate are often issued as 325mg, but that is not elemental.
Elemental iron in those is 65mg each. It is the worst iron out there! Not
well absorbed at all, and that's the one ppl associate with pain and
constipation. Remember that all iron must be taken with vit C, not with
caffeine, dairy, eggs, whole grains or any other vites, meds or minerals.
Personally, I used the carbonyl, Tender Iron by brand.
