Question:
How does medical insurance differ between a abdomenplasty and a lower body lift?
I know letters of medical necessity(rashes and back pain) are helpful for a tummy tuck. What does approval for a lower body lift require. I realize all insurances are different and nothing is a guarantee but I could use some guidance regarding this. Thank you — Lynne C. (posted on February 16, 2005)

Very few insurance companies will cover a true LBL. It is just very
difficult to sell them on the need to remove the saddlebags and raise the
butt and convince them it isn't cosmetic. In my case if I would have just
had the full extended abdominoplasty they approved done I would have had
this tight gut and HUGE saddlebags that would never have fit in any
clothes. I would have had to get pants 3-4 sizes larger just to get them
over the thighs and then what would I have done with the huge waist. We
tried for approval and the lateral thigh lift portion was determined
cosmetic. I could have fought it but truthfully I would have had a hard
time keeping a straight face and saying it was medically necessary. It was
only necessary to fit in clothes. So I just covered the LTL portion of the
LBL.
