Question:
How much vitamin D?

I recently read the article about vitamin D research from the main gallery page and was thinking that I would look at supplementing vitamin D....and maybe even A and E - at least over the winter. Being that I already get some (1200i.u.) from my multi-vites and calcuim supplement, how much more should I be taking? Would I be better off taking a A, D & E supplement instead...and again...how much? Thanks!    — eaamc (posted on October 29, 2003)

Andrea, I read that both A & D can cause toxicity issues is we take too much, including loss of bone density which can lead to osteoporosis and kidney/liver problems. Do you think that with your two multi's a day that you might already be getting enough of those? I did not see anything written for toxicity of too much E. This was on the nutrition site of MayoClinic.com.

Assuming you are RNY, probably a small dry form supplement of A&D. The general public can take 800IU of E safely for heart health. Since we malabsorb it (to a degree), the 800IU should be, in theory, safe for us. The only way you'll know for sure where you are is yur quraterly labs. And you will probably have to ask for A, D and zinc levels.
