Question:
Can any tell me some good brands for protein shakes and protein bars?
I went to the vitamin shop and bought a few protein drinks and protein bars. Let me just tell you they were nasty! I don't like the chalky taste in the bars. Anyone have a brand that they like? — Jaime K. (posted on May 26, 2003)

I like the Atkins bars: chocolate coconut (like a MOunds), choc peanut
butter, and almond brownie the best. I also like the vanilla shake by
Atkins. I tend to keep the Atkins stuff in my desk at work or in my truck
as emergency food in case I forget my lunch or snacks (or to eat
breakfast). But I try like heck to train myself to eat regular food so I
don't build up a reliance on the bars. For a regular protein supplement, I
use the EAS AdvantEdge Whey protein powder readily available at most
Walmarts (and reasonably priced). Any soy based protein is going to be
chalky...go for the whey-based proteins, as whey is absorbed more easily by
WLS patients anyway(anywhey?) The EAS is sweetened with stevia (an herb)
and mixes with water, skim, or soy milk and is not heavy at all. It also
tastes good because it doesn't have a ton of additive vitamins in it. I
feel that I take enough vitamins already without having to taste them in my
regular protein powder. Just my Opinion, and good luck!

I feel your pain lol...anyways i am very picky but i do like the chocalate
why designer protien powder, mix the powder with water a little bit of ice
and either a banana or ur favorate yogart (i hate yogart, but the
banana/strawberry taste good) this makes for a very tasty shake...also as
for a protien bar, hate them all except one its the chocalate chip brownie
EAS Advant Edge, these are the only two protien suppliments i will use.
Good luck!

I use the Real Meals protein shakes (2 a day), took a little getting use to
at first(but it is worth it, alot of benefits) And for the Protein bars I
like the Zone bars, chocolate mint taste like girl scout thin mints, and
the chocolate graham is good too, I can only eat half at a time because of
the sugar content. Hope this helps....good luck.

I like the Atkins Ready to Drink shakes. Very good and convenient. I also
eat the Balance Gold protein bars. They have several different flavors.
They are good and you can buy them at Walmart for 96 cents. That helps.
Good luck!

I recommend that you order single-serving samples of protein powders from
either vitalady.com or wlssuccess.com, before you invest in a big tub of
*anything*. There are many nasty protein powders out there, and everyone's
tastes are very individual. Personally, I like Proscore 100 Chocolate
(Champion Nutrition), with ProBlend 55 Swiss Chocolate as a back-up, *but*
I know people who don't care for either brand.<P>I don't like protein
bars, either!

I like the Nectar protein drinks - Apple Ecstasy in particular - I also
love the Trioplex bars - they taste similar to no-bake cookies!

I like Real Meals shakes. I have chocolate mixed with a teaspoon of sugar
free Quick or make a strawberry smoothy with the vanilla. I had to get
creative after drinking plain vanilla for 3 months. I love the Balance Gold
bars. They are a little high in carbs but tend to be the only carbs in my
day anyway. I also like Detour and Uturn bars but only eat half. They also
make a half sized one but it is hard to find so far. The only thing for me
at 4+ months out is that I can easily eat that half and am tempted to eat
more because they are so yummy. I have yet to find a low carb bar that does
not gag me after a couple of bites. Like everything else I probably just
need to get used to it! Good Luck!

I also like the Atkins ready to drink cans, strawberry especially. There
is also a drink from Bariatrix, available at www.i-shophere.biz that is
like koolaid, not a thick shake. They make several fruit flavors. My
favorite is wild berry passion. As for bars, I have only tried the Detour
bar, and didn't care for it. Good luck!

I've found Protein Plus Extreme Whey with 46 gr of protein per serving is
good tasting and high protein (sold at GNC stores) Also like Designer
Whey...DO NOT like Atkins powders....they are too thick, chalky. I make
my own drink with 8 oz water, 1/3 cup powdered milk, sweetner, 1 Tb.
peanut butter, and maybe a small piece of soft banana, in a blender. Can
be flavored with various sugar free Jello powders. Good luck!

Jaime, everyone's tastes are different and in fact, your tastes will change
too. As a new post-op, your tastes are completely different from what they
will be months later. You can go to vitalady.com and get samples to see
which ones you like.
My favs are Isopure Zero Carb for vanilla and I mix that with
ice/water/fresh frozen fruit. For chocolate, I like Designer Whey
Chocolate and usually mix with a banana or some peanut butter/ice. For
protein bars, by far, the best one out there is the Detour Bar...if you
haven't tried it, do so!! Balance Gold-all flavors, is also good but it
has 12 sugars so the Detour is better for you.

I have tried many bars. I like the EAS AdvantEdge in cookies and cream
flavor, and the chocolate peanut butter is pretty good too. My favorite
bar, by far, is the U-Turn bar, made by Designer Whey. Since I HATE most
breakfast foods, and need the protien, I eat a U-Turn bar for breakfast
every morning. I actually crave it. I buy them at GNC durning their
"Gold Card week", and then they are less than $2.00 each. For me,
that is a bargain, since it is half of my surgeon's required daily protein.
The rest I can easily get in with my food. Good luck in finding something
that works for you! 295/199/140 open 11/20/02
