Question:
Does anyone have experience using chelated iron?

I've been using Carbonyl "Perfect" Iron since early post-op. My labs at 4 months were okay and I'm waiting on the latest results. But I'm tired a lot...I mean I'm way more mobile than I was when I was pre-op. Just don't have the boundless energy so many people talk about. I thought I'd try some chelated iron and see how that goes. I read online that chelated iron bypasses the stomach and goes straight to the small intestine so there's no irritation. Will this be acceptable? I appreciate any feedback ya'll offer. - Anna LAP RNY 7/3/02 -117lbs.    — Anna L. (posted on March 5, 2003)

Anna, I have had experience with chelated iron and for me it did not work. I have been seeing a blood specialist since about 6 months out when my iron levels dropped dangoroulsy low and I now have to get iron through a IV. I hope this does not scare you, I only want to advise you to have your doctor keep a close eye on it. I like you get VERY tired and somedays I cannot get out of bed. I thought being a size 5 now, that i would be a bouncing ball of energy and its not so...the doctor has just come to the determination that my new tummy does not absorb iron... Best of luck to you

Have you had your B12 levels checked. I have seen a lot of people say that low B12 levels were causing them to be very tired. It's certainly worth looking into.

I do use B12. I was using liquid sublingual, 1200mcg 3 to 4 times per week. Switched to 1000mcg sublingual tabs last week. I wonder about iron I guess because pre-op I had a period once every 6 months, now I have them every 28 days like clockwork and kinda heavy.

The carbonyl is the gentlest most effect of the small dose irons I've seen. If your numbers are sagging toward the bottom fo the range, you might need to up the iron. You're doing the iron rules, right? With vit C, one hour away from any other meds, vites, minerals, dairy or caffeine?

Michelle, I certainly do the iron "rules." I've been listening to you :) The recommended amount of Carbonyl on the bottle is 50mg. How much more should I be taking? Just try adding one? Or two? I don't want to overdo it either right? Thanks much!!! - anna
