Question:
Do Pills Sit In Our Stomachs?

I heard that when you take pills, they will sit in your stomach for hours! Being post-op, I heard that when we tak e acalcium pill, because of the fact that we don not have the acids to break down the pills, it sits in our stomachs for HOURS before beginning to decompose. That is not a good thing. What do you think?    — Elizabeth P. (posted on January 12, 2003)

My son "shadowed" a doctor last summer because he is a med student and he said that the doctor had to go in and 'retrieve" tablets that had accumulated, via endoscopy. That is why I like liquid isotonix vitamins that Barbara Thompson sells on her website WLS.com. They don't hurt and go right into the system instantly!

I just found this great calcium citrate to take at Walmart, it's called "drinkables", is vanilla flavored and is about $8 for 16 days worth. It's pricey but I too would prefer to take it in liquid or chewable form. Also at walmart I found all the rest of my vitamins in either liquid or chewable form, with the exception of iron. I don't think they sell it in that form, it will stain your teeth in a chewable form from what I've heard, but you can buy it in a smallish type tablet. I didn't realize pills could just sit in your stomach for long periods of time, I just thought it would make it easier on our new stomachs to use it in liquid type. Now that is yet another great reason to not take another pill! Good luck.

On pills. Some will sit forever. The ones I take do not. They are dissolving as they go. Calcium is a different matter. Are you asking if it will absorb? Stick with calcium citrate form. The form it goes into your mouth is not particularly important. Mine are caps. I tested them & they're mush in less than 4 minutes in saliva. And then, there are the periodic labs that verify that I am absorbing what I take.
