Question:
I was wondering what you guys are eating 10-12 days post-op
because I feel like I may be over doing it. I'm on soft foods now and I thought that a few weeks out that we are soppose to be liquids. I'm i over doing It? I usally in the morning eat an egg, lunch 1/2 cup of chiken noodles, dinner, I eat more soup. I'm also concerned that i'm not getting that much protein in, and i can't yet tolrate solids to the fullest. have any of you eaten soft foods this early or sould i slow down and just drink protein shakes? — jennifer O. jenn-i am only 8 days post op and my surgeon has us on full liquid diets
until 1 month out and then to the soft foods, of eggs, toast etc. this is
something you need to discuss with your surgeon to see if he wants you
eating all this so soon...be careful and good luck, gale

I started soft foods 12 days post-op. My first meal was thin cream of
wheat. The next morning, I had half a scrambled egg. For lunch, I had
baked potato. For dinner I had some canned salmon. I rarely ate soup
because it goes through the pouch like liquid. The only time I ate soup
after starting on soft foods was when I went to a Chinese restaurant and I
had hot and sour soup - I literally craved it for about two months. For
about 4 days after I started soft foods I ate eggs, salmon, cottage cheese
and potatos. Then I had baked fish, refried beans, more cottage cheese and
so on until about 4 weeks post-op when I started introducing grilled meats.
By 6 weeks post-op I was eating steak and salad. The only time I had
problems was if I forgot and didn't chew well enough or if the food was too
dry. I still have problems with meat if it dry and I have to have gravy or
sauce with chicken.
Oh, I don't eat pasta or noodles at all - they make me very ill.

My surgeon, Dr. Voravit Wongsa in Houston, Texas, has his patients begin
with meats and veggies on the 8th day. It's been 4 weeks, and I am down 25
pounds.

Hi! I am 2 months out from surgery and was on full liquids for 1 whole
month. It was torture but really taught me alot about when I had cravings
to eat. You should consider eating 6 small meals per day to get in more
protein. I would say that at 10-12 days post op you should not be eating
anything starchy like noodles. They fill you up too fast and don't provide
anything that your body needs right now. When I was at that stage,
everything I put in my mouth had protein in it. SF Carnation Instant
Breakfast, SF pudding made with skim milk, yogurt, tomato soup made with
skim milk, etc... Even at 10 days post op I was starting to get in the
proper amount of protein. This is essential for good healing. Don't rush
the food. You have the rest of your life to experiment with other things.
Right now do what is best for your body. Good Luck! (Open RNY 8/5/02

I am 7 wks post-op and down 45 lbs. My surgeon had me on soup(drain as
much fluid as possible) on day 5, I ate soup for two wks, then he had me
start on meats- anything except steak..Remember-chew, chew, and chew some
more..I am still on meats, but at two wks he also had me start on a protein
shake. I drink Optimum Pro-Complex..Chocolate is delicious..I wish you the
very best of luck.....
