Question:
Meat seems to heavy

At 5 months post-op (RNY - distal)I am having a problem with any kind of meat... (pork, chicken, beef, fish, you name it) I can only get an ounce in (if that) and if I eat that ounce, that's ALL I can eat (not just of the meat, of anything!). It sits so heavy in my pouch, that often, I just try to substitute the meat out of my meal (with beans and such). Does anyone have any ideas for "weaning" myself back onto meets, to get some of the protien and so maybe I can stop this meat craving thing (I've never been a good vegetarian).... (and FYI, I boil, steam and Forman my meats and cut off all fats and skins)    — Elizabeth D. (posted on May 6, 2002)

I am 11 months post-op. I had the same problem for quite some time. Beef was the worse. The smell of it would just make me sick. When I would eat it, it would lay like a lead balloon. It's better now, but I've learned not to each too much beef. If you can't tolerate the meat, then find other foods that could make up for the protein.

This will change, you are only five months out. Good for you! My surgeon instructs to eat dense meat, chew well, then go for the veggies & fruit. This is the way to train your pouch for LONG TERM weight loss & keeping it off. At five months, you could eat a less dense meat. I lived on meatloaf at that stage & fish. Good luck.

I have been told that meat is more tolerable with something to give it more moisture like sauce or gravy. Good luck on your journey.

Hi! I am only 2 months out, but I too have an extremely difficult time with meat in general. I solved that by buying Morning Star brand meat subsitutes. They have bacon, chicken and hamburger. All of which taste better then the real thing! They are all vegetable, so I don't have any problems getting them down! Good luck to you.

Elizabeth, it all depends upon how the meat is cooked I have read and in my experience! Stewing whatever the meat as in soup or shredded following boiling works best as the meat is moist and not as dense. Does this make sense? I have done better with beef overall than chicken but each person is very different in this. I like to boil nice beef and shred it for use in tacos, chili, Italian dishes, etc. It does get easier as time goes on as well. Good Luck!
