Question:
What is everyone eating to get in 80 grams of protein a day?
Hi! I am just over 4 weeks post op. I am almost never hungry. How are some people getting in 80 grams of protein a day when I can barely make 20 ( I am being generous it's more like 10)? Also how much water should I be drinking in an hour's time. I am having a hard time with 64 oz. a day. Most days I only get between 40-50 oz a day. It's getting a little better since I have been combining diet snapple and water. Thanks for any input... Tracy — tracyr (posted on February 10, 2002)

I was on clear liquids for 4 weeks so I got NO protein. When I was allowed
full liquids I had 2 protein drinks a day about 40 gr. I had bean soup
pureed and strained , cottage cheese blended with lactaid fat free milk to
make it soupy. I also read here about knox gelatin added to our drinking
water for a little protein there. Jello , crystal lite body quenchers(or is
that calcium). I always supplemented the entire first year with 2 protein
drinks a day to insure that no matter what , I was guaranteed at least to
achieve a somewhere close to 70-80 gr in the course of the day. WATER was
very difficult for me. I was a big water drinker pre op , post op it was
like razor blades. I could drink it with a very dilute crystal lite in it.
And I sipped all day long from a sports bottle that held 20 oz . That was
the only way I could keep track of what I drank. I took that bottle
everywhere!

You won't be able to this early. I would suggest Knox Nutra Joint drink.
You mix it with water and no sugar with lots of protein in just 4-8 oz of
water. I was on liquids for 3 weeks, mush for 1, soft for 1 then food, It
took me months to get up to an adequete amount of protein, Not to panic, it
comes with time. Enjoy the quick weight loss now when you don't have the
appetite..that does return.

Amazing how different doctors give different guidelines. My doctor says
50g/day. While I was in the hospital the nutritionist came by and we talked
about my worry about getting all my protein in and she said don't worry
because we as a society are SO good about getting more protein than is
needed that I will eventually have no problem getting up to 50gms. I'm not
sure about that but it has sured helped me to stop obsessing about my daily
protein fix. I think my daily choices on eating healthier foods will take
care of my protein needs. (p.s.: I'm only 1 week post-op)
