Question:
Hubby and I are only 4 days post-op RNY and have several questions.
Both hubby and I survivied surgery on the same day (last Thursday) and we're home - oh home sweet home!! Except for the first 24 hours when hubby was in ICU as a precautionary step because of his past heart problems, we were even in the same room. :-) Everyone was always soooo surprised to walk in and see us. Now, our questions... Will I always have gas and burping and will it always hurt? Since I had my gallbladder out, is my diarrhea from the gall bladder removal, the RNY surgery or both? Either way, will it return to normal some day? We just started adding our protein supplements today. We are adding about 30 gm of protein twice a day since we had 100 cm bypassed - does that amount sound right? Does anyone have trouble drinking plain water? I can drink Crystal Light and other liquids, but when I drink plain water I can feel it trinkle all the way down and it's somewhat painful. Should I avoid it for a while? We just started full liquids today and had tomato soup with water and some sugar free pudding with fat free milk. One time I saw a site listed with some good recipes for post ops. Would someone mind posting it again or emailing it to me at [email protected]? Thanks everyone for the wealth of information provided here which enabled us to take the big step to do this surgery!!!! — Anika R. (posted on April 30, 2001)

The D might be from the milk--it's just a glass of sugar, so it may be the
reaction to sugar. Some people don't tolerate tomato soup due to high
sugar, too. Once you isolate the offender, yes, you will return to more
normal bowel habits. I burped quite often for about 3 months after my
original AND after revision. Charming. But it felt better. I also didn't
tolerate water very well. Was very irritating to the pouch & stoma. As
it turned out, it was a marginal ulcer, which is pretty rare with a
proximal, but not rare with my distal. If it keeps up or you have nausea,
you'll want to get a scope. It felt like sand paper to me when I had an
active ulcer. Did I hit everything?

Its too soon to say what's causeing the diarrhea -- could be a combination,
could be the gallbladder removal or the surgery or the anesthsia, or your
pain meds, etc. Congrats on the surgery for you both. Have you tried the
water warm? or ice cold? or room temp? These ideas may help. Again, it is
early for your new pouch and I bet you'll be much better in a few weeks.

Hi! I am one month postop and don't worry - you guys are doing great. i
still have a hard time with plain water at any temp - I don't know why.
The first 2 weeks it tasted *horrible* (an anesthesia side effect) since
then it makes me nauseas too. So I stick to CL and gatorade mostly, or a
little lemon and spenda. I was very burpy and gurgley for about a week -
then that stopped. I, too, suffer from occasional D. even still, but not
as bad as it was the first week. I agree, go gently on the milk! 12g. of
sugar is a lot, try drinking less or slower. Best wishes!

I am sorry I don't know the cause of your diarrhea, however I have found
that Imodium AD is absolutely great. My surgeon permitted this freshly post
op and I have used it many times. The best part is that the pills (caplets)
are soooooooooooo tiny! They go down quite easily. Check with your surgeon
and see if he permits this. It really does work!
