Question:
Do some foods smell funny to you?
Some foods like chicken, beef and other foods smell funny to me...does anyone have the same stuff going on? Can you eat salads? — Julie M. (posted on September 15, 2004)

It took nearly a year following my WLS for smells and tastes to calm down.
I can't drink milk to this day because of all the smell problems I had
during that period and just the smell of it turns me off. I'm still kind
of put off by chicken too, but at least they don't taste as funny as they
once did. It's normal I'm told.

In the beginning, right after surgery, everthing smelled funny. Clothing
that had just been washed and rinsed with Downy, smelled sour to me. I
couldn't breathe fresh air when taking a shower, it all smelled so bad. My
skin smelled horrible, even though I could have just showered and my
husband said it was in my imagination. These have gotten better over the
past few weeks -- I am 5 weeks postop

Early on ketosis affect taste and smell, you likely have bad breathe. This
is from your body using itself up and means your loosing great. eventually
this slows down and weight loss slows. In my case water tastred like
metal:( I had to drink it flavored with strong sugar free koolaid.

Ahh..the lovely world of post-op smells. After my surgery, I thought I
smelled, I was positive my husband was rotten and most food was disgusting.
It calmed down some after a few months, but recently cottage cheese has
smelled spoiled to me (and tasted bad)..I left it alone for months because
I was sick of it and when I tried it again..it was putrid.
It's just one of those things.

Everything has changed with this surgery. I was the biggest beef eater in
the world. Now (16 months post op) I haven't had beef once! I LOVE hot
spicy food. Hot Sause goes on everything. Smells I haven't really
noticed.
