Question:
Has anyone used boiled peanuts as a protein source?
I am 3 weeks post-op and my doctor has me on 3 tbsp. of protein 3 times a day, and a protein supplement if I can tolerate it. I am tired of tuna and chicken. I cannot have red meat. I visited my brother in SC and tried some boiled peanuts and they went down very well. Are they a good source of protein? Good to subsitute for the chicken and tuna? Thanks in advance for your responses. Tara — Tara J. (posted on March 4, 2004)

I haven't had them, but looked boiled peanuts up on fitday.com and it says
per 1 oz. it's 3.58 grams of protein. But the fat content and the sodium
content is high if they're prepared with salt.

I don't know about protein but they sure help me with constipation. Too bad
they are high in fat etc. I love them and can justify a few now and then
for the fiber.
P.S. How about eggs or cheese and cottage cheese for protein?

I live in SC, and have used boiled peanuts as my main source of protein
during the time when I could not eat meat... they will also make you
thirsty so you will get in more water...However instead of making me have
diarehea they constipate me, so try them slowly to see how you will react.
I am 23 months post-op. and still enjoy them during the summer months when
they are readily available at most every produce stand. Also, Walmart
carries a pretty acceptable canned version, near the popcorn aisles. Good
luck on your journey! Anita Kearney

Meat was so hard for me, boiled peanuts WAS my source of protein for the
first few months. Yummy, salty and soft. Easy on the tummy too.
